Hello!
Recently, I have been feeding my chickens some Parakeet seed from my local pet store. They went crazy for it, so I thought it would be fine. But today, while making scrambled eggs, I noticed small seeds in the yolk, this happened 3 different time, out of the 7 eggs I was using. This makes me nervous, because I give away my eggs, and I cant give eggs away with impurities.

Are the seeds a cause of the Parakeet seeds Ive been feeding them? I also noticed a a few blood spots along with the seeds. Is this normal?

Hello! So first of all, do you have a rooster? I so, the blood spots are where they were fertilized. Don't worry; this is normal. And about the seeds.. I'm really not sure. It's probably best to put them on just Layer Pellets though. For a treat you could give them some cracked corn or a watermelon rind, maybe some old strawberries or apple cores. My birds love that stuff! ;)

Actually red spots in eggs are not signs of fertilization, but they are actually meat spots.

From Eggland's Best:

What are blood spots and meat spots?

The American Egg Board website www.aeb.org offers the following information on blood spots - also called meat spots - occasionally found on an egg yolk. Contrary to popular belief, these tiny spots do not indicate a fertilized egg or the presence of a disease. Rather, they are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the yolk surface during formation of the egg or by a similar accident in the wall of the oviduct. Less than 1% of all eggs produced have blood spots.

Candling methods reveal most eggs with blood spots and those eggs are removed but, even with electronic spotters, it is impossible to catch all of them in the candling process, especially in brown eggs due to the darker color shell. As an egg ages, the yolk takes up water from the albumen to dilute the blood spot so, in actuality, a blood spot indicates that the egg is fresh. Both chemically and nutritionally, these eggs are fit to eat. The spot can be removed with the tip of a knife, if you wish.
