ok, so i've read some post on spraddle legs. My first attempt at it, left, first aid tape, stuck to his one leg. At this time i left it on him, he was crying....

My next attempt seem to be holding. I folded the tape in half first so the sticky was on his legs... it's been holdong for 3 days now.

So, i forgot to say he a silkie..i'm calling him lil peanut..LP

Now my question, How long do I keep the tape on his legs... He gets around, he eats, he drinks, and he poops... His legs were WAY out to the side... He's keeping up with the big guys...

Here's a pic, but really only to show how small he is...

I feel your pain - I have a quail with spraddle leg, they are even tinier than bantams when they're born!!!!!!!! It took me all day yesterday...................I tried EVERYTHING - band aids, tape, rubber bands, etc. I finally used ribbon and it seems to be working...................However, this is one tough quail, he's gonna be a meany when this is over, I've read it takes about a week. I've learned my lesson - leave them in the bator for a good amount of time after they hatch. Even longer than I was told to.

3 days should be good-I have done it before and it fixed itself with the bandaide for two days-took it off and now you cant tell which one had it on! Id take it off and see how he does. If his legs give way put a fresh one back on.

ok...thanks. I'll try it...He hops and scoots around and it looks like he really likes the one RIR... LOL

I'd remove the newspaper and put paper towels under the cloth towels too. Newspaper is slick by itself and they must be moving the cloth towels around when they run and play so it becomes exposed. This way he gets a good grip. I'd like to add that they are so darn cute!!

Hi there. Newspaper is slippery, and you are more likely to have chicks with spraddle leg if you use that. I always use pine shavings. You can buy a HUGE bag at TSC for like $5.99, and it' ALOT. I have to wheel it out on a cart. Seriously, it fluffs up enough to cover a horse stall.

Paper towels will also work, but you've really got to avoid anything slippery like newspaper, or this will be a continual problem for you.

He sure is a cute little thing......

Good luck to you!

take a regular sized bandaid and cut in in half. the bandage part is just the right distance for the space between the legs. wrap the adhesive apart around each leg. I have had success with this several times.

I had a chick who was "born" with spraddle legs. We didn't do much- he just kinda grew out of it as he learned to walk better. He was always the "gimp" and he was also the smallest of the hatch. He turned out fine and is now living a great life on a farm in oregon.

wishing for the best for the little guy!

oh no...i wish i would have gotten back online to see this about the newspaper..i just changed/cleaned it all out again...i have pine shaving, didn't think nothing of it.....will add the shavings today....

I took the tape off and he's a happy lil camper...running around with everyone...I thought that maybe he should have that tape put back on, but I was going to use a hair tie...I tired to put it on, he was SO mad, so i left him...
I think i know a happy "cheep" to a mad "cheep"...LOL

thanks for all the help...
Melinda

i tried to name him Elpy (L P) (lil peanut)...but my son wants to name him Forrest...
