Spring 2011 RAISE-A-LONG!

I need to stay away from the local poultry swap.

I went to pick up two more chicks I'd ordered a while ago, and came home with four. I think the only reason I didn't come home with even more is because I only went with a limited amount of cash. But I have to be done now, besides a Silkie or two, because I'm up to twenty and my coop is only 8x10. I'm not too worried, since we only plan to keep one rooster and most of the chicks are straight run, but I do have to stop myself.

I'm jumping in after only reading page one. I hope I'm not too late.

I have 3 chicks (we are allowed to have 2 without a permit here) 2 RIR's and 1 SLW they are all girls. My chicken math seems to be slightly conservative I figured I'd better get three in case we lose one along the way. I thought this would be a fun experience for my children to watch something grow up and get eggs. I gathered eggs as a child when we lived on a farm in a huge coop so I think my kids will have fun gathering from our three. They are 9 days old today they are getting wing feathers but otherwise still downy.

I was having a lot of fun looking at coops on here until my husband came home last night and told me his friend that likes to build stuff is making us a coop. I have no idea what to expect. I hope I like it.

I don't know how to post pictures yet. =/

I got my chicks at Orscheln's does anyone have those near them or am I the only one? I like it better than our TSC.

I got 6 chicks from TSC, they're assorted pullets. They are 4 weeks tomorrow! They will go out in the coop I purchased in a week or so, then I plan on getting some bantams and raise them in my brooder! I absolutely love my chickens! I saw you mentioned you are in high-school? I graduated last year and am glad to meet some chicken lovers my age! Stay I'm touch and we'll swap pics of our babies!!

oh and my names courtney!

I'd like to join in! I just got 4 RIRs this morning, the local feed store said they only had four left, and I was going to get them on Sunday anyway, soooo....here they are in my office, in a cardboard box. I am such a chicken newbie, I have no idea how often to handle them, what to do with them.

Aaaagh! Off to do some research!

my week old polish is too cute for words

Well...looks like my 2 week old girls DO NOT like bananas! They take a quick bite, then spend five minutes rubbing their beaks in their bedding to get rid of it lol. They're not huge yogurt fans either...darned hard to please chicks
