Spring 2011 RAISE-A-LONG!

They are really attached to us already it seems. They didnt even ATTEMPT to run off. They stayed right with us, in a group, didnt wander at ALL. Then when it was time to go in, they scooped up just fine to go back in the brood box.

Yikes! You've got 19 chicks! That would scare me too haha. I'd say take them out in small groups maybe? I only have four 2.5 week olds and they are just enough for me to handle when I take them outside. They skip away a little bit when I try to catch them but for the most part they're easy to round up. 19 chicks might be a different story haha. Good luck!

Keep posting about your chicks, everyone! I love seeing all of the itty bitty babies

took all 12 out again today for about an hour. I even moved around the yard, and they kept following me! lol! it was so cute...I am so their mama!

Well we aredown to 13. My dad came and picked 6 yesterday. We got one on those chicken hutches from TSC and have them moved outside in that with a heat lamp. They seem rather happy!! We braved it and let them out in the yard today. Seemed to do very well!! A little tricky to catch but overall fun to watch. LOTS of dust bathing. Another nite, 3 of my large white cochin chicks had bloody spots today

Tails and necks were both picked at. I put those three in a separate brooder and cleaned them up with peroxide. They are ok now and snuggling together. I'm guessing it's just a "pecking orderl" thing but I didn't know it started so early!! I bought stiptic powder JUST in case

That is so cute! Two of mine (the two we got the oldest, funnily enough) are like that and I'm okay having them free range already. Most of the rest of the older ones (who are 7 weeks now) I put in a makeshift tractor or in our fenced-in garden. They do all stay pretty close together. In fact, one kept getting separated from the rest and each time he'd stand and peep really loud until I picked him up and put them all back together again. So I don't think one would take off unless they all did, but there are a few who will still run when I try to round them up.

All seven of my Australorp babies (hatched 3/23) are doing well. I still have to build my coop but I can't start until they finish building the garage. Hopefully they finish it this week so I can start my project. I'm on my own with building the coop (husband won't help). Glad my dad taught me how to use tools.

Since I'm not going to be dying eggs yet (No hens laying!), my friend convinced me to dye my hair with her, so right now I am on here waiting for blue, pink, and purple chunks of dye to set. I have actually been wanting to do crazy olors for a while now, but I have always been scared to bleach it.

Anyway, after I bleached and dryed my hair, I decided to go check on the chicks, and they FREAKED out! They were all pecking at my hair, and kind of scared at first

Now I can't wait for them to see me with the colors added in...

Haha! They're thinking "MAMA! What happened to your HAIR???" lol

Good for you putting such fun and funky colors in, I just went from red to platinum blonde recently and it was fun

hahaha that's so funny! I was going to take my babies out today but I was just to pooped to go out with them and keep up with them. They tend to be on the cautious side outside so they find a nice place they don't have to worry about and I sit on the other side of them to protect them. I prefer the back yard but they prefer this area in the front where the steps meet the hosue so it's a corner. Oh well, They will get more brave eventually. They own the bathroom right now. I walked in on them walking around this morning. Jacqueline went running cheeping to her sister that the giant came back.

Went to the feed store today for some local honey...and they had new peeps in! Ameraucanas and Buff Orps!!! I wanted some SOOOO bad, they were teensy weensy itty bitty babies! Darned chicken math
