Spring 2017 first timers post!

Actually I'm getting 9 out of an order of 17, another local person is splitting an order with me. And I deliberately over ordered so that if we had losses I would still have the total I needed. Everyone here took turns picking out chicks from the catalog and for the most part we got pretty or unusual birds with a few steady layers thrown in to meet the egg consumption quota.

We're going to use a MH brooding system this time around, and at about 4 weeks we'll move them out to a integration area in the coop.

move them out? From where? Why not MHP in the integration area?

move them out? From where? Why not MHP in the integration area?

Happy hens that I know are well cared for is the exact reason why we started with chickens. I don't want to ever buy conventional eggs again once the hens we have now are in full production. Eventually I'd like to get a second coop and see if we can pull off raising our own meat birds. The ladies will probably be here for 3 years and then be phased out by a younger generation. Not sure if we'd buy hens for a broody or eventually add a rooster. We have such a mixed flock I'm not sure which way we'd go.

I'd start them in the coop but there is zilch power in it and no way of running power out to it. But they'll be in an unheated garage so that they're used to the outside temperature. We're on the coast of NC so it's not all that cold in January, not that I'll believe that when I'm sitting in the garage staring at them for hours at a time. Our last batch came through in June so temps weren't a problem at all.

I'm a first- time to-be chicken parent, expecting 7 littles from My Pet Chicken on/around July 10th. I'll be brooding inside with the hopes of getting them into their coop between 4-6 weeks. We have warm enough weather at that time of the year so I think it will work.

My husband will be building my coop. He'll probably get started first thing in he spring. I want to make sure it's all ready when they are. I'm really excited and have been reading as much as I can to be prepared. I'm looking forward to reading other newbie's stories.
