I picked up my girls on Saturday.
Esther-Easter Egger
Poulet- Speckled Sussex
Lucy-Blue Ameracauna
Jemima- Maran (not sure what kind)
Chicky-BO
Cespy- Golden Laced Wyandotte
Nugget-Polish
Hennie-White leghorn

My husband and I finished the coop and run this weekend. We lost 2 girls one Sunday night (easter egger) and another yesterday morning (polish). My daughter was heart broken. We went back to the farm yesterday and they replaced them and so far so good.I love watching them. When can I give them a grape as a treat?

Thanks!!!!
Vicki
Funny, my Maran is named Jemima too. We call her Jem for short

Decided on the coop we want! I'm going the "I work everyday and don't have time or skill to build a coop" route lol we are having a prefab wooden shed built the original design is a potting shed but we are getting the shelves taken out and having a second human door put on the other side and two chicken doors beside them for our two runs :D we love the plexiglass roofing to let in plenty of sunlight! Planning to paint it bright pink and decided our backyard operation will be called Rosie's Hen House in memory of my grandmother

What are the dimensions? Just a thought: Based on your climate, you may find that with that much sunlight streaming in all day, it may get too hot in the summer. You will also want to add extra ventialtion over what comes with a standard shed design. Otherwise, I love it, and especially like the idea that you are having a walk in coop built. You will love it!

@faery69 what a beautiful coop! I love that it was designed as a potting shed but you saw the potential for a fantastic hen house! Just goes to show what a little creative thinking can come up with.
While I think it's prudent to consider the effects of the sun during the hot season, it's equally important to consider the sun in the cooler season too. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in an area with all seasons, maybe placing the coop in a location that takes advantage of shade trees in the summer with bare branches in the winter could offer the best of both worlds?
I think it's a perfectly beautiful coop and to name it for your grandmother just makes me smile :)

There are three regular windows on the tall side of the shed and also the vents in the top corners we will add fans in the summer if needed one facing in and one facing out to circulate air

I'm in central NC it's gets fairly warm in summer 90s to low 100s max in winter we rarely go below freezing for very long unfortunately since I live in a development we only have one tree in our entire yard we are trying to position it so the run is shaded

Thanks for the compliment we laughed about the name because my grandmother was a city slicker but she would have laughed at the irony lol

We are almost 2 weeks into the brave new world of Chickland - and they're getting so big!!! I love documenting it with photos.

Also, ummmm, I may have gone to the feed store for meal worms today and spotted the last lone Speckled Sussex in the stock tank and just HAD to bring her home. So that makes my flock a party of six.
