"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

One chick was pipping this morning and when I got home from work it was out and dry. There were no other pippers until just a bit ago, one more. Nothing from the others yet! Day 21 will officially start in an hour or two.
Good Luck!

Waffles (black on the left), Biscuits (lavender in the back), Gravy (lavender in the front) and Toast (black on the right).

Cute!

I was lucky enough to win half a dozen "rainbow" eggs in one of the Easter HAL contests here! I asked for primarily green/blue egg layers and boy did they deliver. they even sent me 7 instead of 6!

they were shipped, so I let them settle for 36 hours when they got here. today is now day 18 and I have moved them over to the hatcher! 2 were clear/didn't start, but the remaining 5 of 7 look good at lockdown.

they had saddle shaped air cells through incubation, but now 4 of their air cells appears to be reattached. 1 egg ("green magnolia") still has a saddle shaped air cell with 2 obvious detached areas when I candle.

I moved them over to the hatcher upright in a carton, and marked their air cells! can't wait!

1 olive egger,
1 easter egger,
1 splash ameraucana,
1 ameri-flower,
1 green magnolia

guesses on how many of these shipped eggs will actually hatch?
Good Luck!

I skipped about 120 posts. Too tired to catch up. The bantam egg my broody was over is now on day 23/24 so I removed, candled and confirmed it to be a quitter. She is now sitting on a day 10 egg (her "backup" egg). This egg is from a Rosecomb Bantam and La Bresse mixed hen and the rooster is an Easter Egger. Because it's only 1 egg I started another backup batch in the incubator now on day 3. Eggs in backup batch #2 are: 5 from a Red Ranger hen, 1 from a Cuckoo Marans hen and 1 from a Black Copper Marans/Black Australorp mixed hen. Rooster is an Easter Egger.

I NEED A SMALL FARM IN CENTRAL PA, NEAR HARRISBURG/HERSEY-STAT

So after setting eggs in the incubator we now haVe 10 chicks from our eggs from the three laying Easter Eggers we recently purchased. The farm had a few roos, but we did not see a naked neck roo, but there must have been one. At first I thought I messed something up when 7 out of the 10 hatched partially bald, lol. After asking questions here I have been enlightened and am now the proud mama of some naked neck chickens, haha. Maybe some will be green egg laying naked necks even.

Almost 1 1/2 weeks old. Anyone want to venture any guesses on how many girls we might have?
I want to keep them all, but have limitations in our suburban back yard neighborhood.

#10 last to hatch, treating for spraddle leg, and the runt.
Mother's are the buff and blue Easter Eggers here

2 of the non naked necks are getting a muff like their mothers already. :) so cute!!
We can't keep them all in our suburban back yard. I NEED a small farm near Harrisburg. Anyone know of any, let me know so we can keep all these babies, ;-)
Best guesses on sex of these about 1 1/2 week olds? I know it's early, but I am dying to hear some opinions from those that know way more than I do!! :-D. Thanks!#
Cute chicks! Good luck finding the small farm.

May update so far:

3 eggs from my April HAL ended up joining the May HAL 1 ee and 2 brown eggs hatched on May 1st

5 turkey eggs from a friend in an incubator waiting to hatch out end of this week (never hatching turkeys before I am unsure if these guys are where they should be but they clearly were all fertile and developing) This friend has lost all the turkey eggs she tried to hatch this year so I am really hoping I don't have that same result.

Due May 14th Runner duck eggs 5 of the runner duck eggs I got from the crazy auction thread are growing and active, the rest look to have not developed. The duck eggs were the easiest I have ever found to candle and see clearly that they are alive and kicking.

The royal palm turkey eggs I got in the crazy auction due the 14th I don't see anything happening? The turkey shells being thicker maybe it is just harder to see?

More to come in May but waiting to do candling to give more time for things to be visible.

For the ones still cooking.

First time doing them but they need the white to be Tolbunt. I bought the eggs as Tolbunt but most of them don't have enough or any white coming through.
They should end up something like this ~

Can't see that happening with most of these

Nothing particularilily rough about today........although I do miss chatting with her.

Hey, i hope i am allowed to ask this hear. I think one of my two day old chicks has omphalitis (sp?). I have researched here and elsewhere on the internet. It's not pasty vent. I have separated her from the others, though she can still see and hear them. She is lethargic, not opening her eyes, and seems to be gasping. She was fine yesterday. I have given her electrolyte water, though she wasn't interested, applied antibiotic gel to the navel, and have a thermometer with her to confirm that the temps are correct. At this point I don't think there is anything else i can do. I am wondering if i should wait it out, or humanely put her down?
