"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

Awesome!!! Welcome to the hatchaholic club! Best of luck with your batch #1!!!!!!
My son and I just fenced in (electric netting) just over 1/2 acre for the new girls to roam once they've outgrown the brooder.

Currently have in pasture:
12 RIR hens
2 RIR roos
16 Black Star hens

In brooder:
19 Black Star pullets
2 White Leghorn cockerels

In incubator:
35 barnyard mix (from the RIR and Black Stars above)

yeah it was useless on my cream colored eggs to. I've got a flashlight with foam window insulation around it and I ordered one like they showed a 3000 lumen one. For my next batch....to hatch...

That's the one I ordered as well. The reviews seemed pretty skeptical about the 3000 lumen number, but anything should outshine my 200 lumen Surefire. Anyway, the Surefire cost enough that I don't want to "single-purpose" it, but a $7 flashlight, I don't mind doing that. And yeah, "here's to the next batch."

One thing to keep in mind is there can't be any external lighting in the room while handling. A completely dark room with no light spilling from the candler is the only way to get a good view of air cells...

I've got my incubator in a room where I can close all the doors and it has no windows. I got that part right. LOL

I have 6 of my bantam cochins going into lock down tomorrow. Have to wonder how many will die while in lock down. Bad bad air cells in three of them. Crossing fingers for a few at least. I knew I shouldn't have ordered from back east. :/ Too far. Took 4 days. Got stuck in the town next to us in their sorting facility on a Sunday.
edit: i quoted the wrong quote at first LOL

this was for you:

I'm so happy! I ordered a variety box of English orpingtons and they are all so beautiful. I can figure out what some of them are but not sure on others. It'll be fun to watch them feather out. Also started the new hatch in the incubator last night. I'll post the numbers later.

Oops I just happened to stop at TSC today.........oh my goodness.
4 bantams unknown kinds. Unknown sex.
1 welsummer pullet, 1 Gold sex link pullet.

Four toes feathered legs looks like fur.

Candeled the eggs at ones week. 70 of 74 are good.

Just have the long two week wait for them to hatch.

Ugh, so my 13 year old dropped an egg when rotating tonight and broke it open. Had to take them out and clean the bator real quick. Then she wanted to have an attitude with me. Got to love teens! So 71 eggs now, down a white silkie. (Maybe, it was only a day old so who knows if it was fertile...I didn't check). Anyhow, the others at 4 days are already showing veins in some of them!
on no!!!!! but glad you have growth!!

I added more eggs a day later, so now we have 25 in the LG bator. I forgot to mention in my initial post that we will have barred rocks/buff orp mix too. Hatch date April 21 or 22. No fan. No Turner. I set my phone timer to go off every 8 hours to turn them myself. And an electric heater set to turn on at 69 in case the wood stove goes out during the night. Last night I rounded up 6 and 3 yr old GS, and went on a candling frenzy. It is so awesome to see the development and some movement already. 6 yo GS said "I just LOVE this!"
I am not sure but I think we have one infertile egg, but not ready to give up hope on it yet.

I love hatching with kiddos!!!

Hi
I set 14 shipped eggs on March 26. Does that mean I can be part of this thread? These eggs should hatch end of next week I guess? This is my first ever hatch. Also my first ever incubator. I'm kind of terrified.
yes you may!! welcome!!!

If you want to go over anything to be sure you are running correct just ask!
