Look! A giant egg looking for an incubator!!!!
Ravenswood, Jackson County
I'm a transplant, I moved here about 2 years ago and still can't find my way around. It didn't take long for me to figure out that my GPS wouldn't work here though.
Lots of chick/chicken news today.
Broody #1 is a 2 year old Cuckoo Marans who is a first time mom. She hatched out 3 chicks and took them down the ramp into the chicken yard yesterday. Last night she went to bed as usual and left the tiny ones out in the dark. After much chasing, I gathered them up and took them in to her. She accepted them and I thought all was well. This morning, the blue copper marans chick was dead in the coop with a broken neck, the iSilverudd Blue chick was no where to be found, apparently eaten, and the isabelle leghorn was standing in the middle of the chicken yard screaming. Mom is merrily munching away with her peeps. She is the next chicken out of here! Being broody was what had saved her this long!
We still have broody #2, #3, #4 and #5 cooking.
I gathered up the weak little one and brought it inside. Since every brooder plate in the place is in use, I put it in a box on the stove to get warm. It finally went to sleep after food, water and heat. So now I have a stove chicken!
In one incubator, the GCM's are hatching. 3 are out so far. One is WHITE! Also, 2 isabelles are out. These guys look good and there are other pips and zips going on in there.
The 24 black and blue copper marans are set and cooking as of last night, BUT I had to use the Brinsea hood that has lost it's mind! I recalibrated to factory settings, but sometimes it is 98.6 and sometimes it is 100.6. There are 2 spot checks in there and I will switch tops when the GCM's get done.
The 24 Silverudd blues and isabelle leghorns are at 7 days now and will be candled, in my spare time, tonight.
In one of the 2 other brooders, in the house, are my latest purchase due to rare breed auction addiction. I cannot even look at that site! These are East Frisian Gull chicks in lemon and gold. 3 d.old.
The next event on my day was to clean the brooder for the now 2 week old dirty little secret DH doesn't know about yet...Silver Queen Silvia's
All the little Silverudd Blues hatched in the EHA from shipped eggs will go outside to a step-down brooder tomorrow. One inside brooder empty!!! Yeah! for a minute anyway.
and finally, I went to the PO, to pick up yesterday's purchase from a friend in MI, of 2 SFH pullets that are 7 weeks old...well...I needed more diversity...![]()
DH retired today, so I feel sure he is going to notice the chick population around here is pretty large...I think I will have to be happy with the chicks I have for a while!![]()
In the meantime, the Silver AM's (Cynthia's fault) DH DOES know about, are lost somewhere in Atlanta for the second day. They may be goners...![]()
So most of my chicks are out of the eggs there are about 6 or seven left hard to really tell with all the action in there but there are at least 3 pipped the oldest chick is about 30 hours old the humidity is at 88 and the chicks that are out are panting and I'm freeking out what do I do???????????????????????
