Ok folks, I have a mystery......I have a White Silkie Cockerel and a Black Silkie crossed with Silver Laced Wynadotte Hen........so why does the 1st chick to hatch yesterday look like a chipmonk?

Pic of my Rooster in my profile. This certainly is a mystery, the little chick has hatched from her own eggs she layed......hubby thinks that maybe Sooty had been with another Roo when she was with the previous owners (we have only had her 3 months) is it possible for the sperm to last 3 months?
Please can someone tell me what breed the little chick is? Silkie/wynadotte and what?

*hugs* Heather x

The longest I've heard is one month, so if the egg was a few more weeks and then 3 more weeks to hatch, then a long maybe...but I also think the genetic combination of different colored breeds comes into it. I know my little chipmunks are game fowl, but it's not the only chick that patterns that way....still a mystery huh!
oh, and usually roos too.

Oh I do hope she turns out to be a she....but I think you may be right, the other chicks that one of my other broodies hatched 2 weeks ago are not so bright coloured as this little one

My guess is that your little chipmunk has the markings of a silver wyandotte but may feather out differently. Here are pics of my 2 day old silver laced wyandottes , my barred rock is in the middle:

You can have all you want!, it grows everywhere , I've removed it from some of the yard, so i can have grass there but the chickens do eat it, I like it in the chick pen because they can hide under it too! Of course it's in all the pastures.
