Should both of a rooster's spurs be cut down? One has been done but the other is really long.

I only keep them trimmed when they are interfering with the roo's movements- so I let them get pretty long. I use a pair of the toenail clippers for dogs: the ones with a spring-squeeze handle and an oval hole for the nail. These don't compress the spur when cutting, and I only take them down to an inch and a half. If permitted, I'll use an emery board to smooth the edges. My Chantecler says it's too metrosexual, and he won't let me, but the other boys enjoy it.

Thanks for the reply. My husband is chasing him down now. We think he killed one of our hens in an over zealous mating ritual.

I used a pair of plyers and twist it off, it comes off pretty easily with not a lot of blood.

I use the Dremel tool with the disc for cutting metal. Just wrap the wings in a towel to calm him, then cut them off. I don't try to take the whole thing off, just the sharp point. I also trim the toe nails, again just cutting off the sharp points so they are blunt. I think mine do more damage with the toe nails than the spurs.
