Spur wound is infected. Want to compare treatment...

OK, not to get too wordy. My BO got me good 4" from the wrist IN a vein. I had blood squirting into the air like a Monty Python movie. I was quick to stick my thumb on it. Washed it off and even poured some peroxide on it. Took several hours to stop seeping. That was May 3rd.

Went in May 5th. The wound wasn't hurting as much, but I was sure it was infected by the small warm patch and slight redness.

I've been taking SMZ/TMP and Doxycycline for 5 days. There's reddish brown discoloration under the skin, off to the side of the wound. I'm not sure if this is blood that pooled underneath or bruising or the infection. The area seems to have grown a little. Maybe it needs more time for the antibiotics to work...

I'm going back to the Doctor again. My question to you is this. If you got a spur infection, what prescription did you get? Maybe there's a different antibiotic I should ask the Doctor about.

I haven't had a spur wound get infected, but I put a drill through my hand in the pig pen when I was dismantling one of the houses. Instant infection. I was given the same thing as you, but I had to take it for 10 or 14 days- I can't remember exactly, but it was a long time.

Eat that boy.

And do keep an eye on that infection. Spur wounds can be difficult to treat if they become infected so keep an eye on it.

I've been spurred a couple of times over the years, but fortunately never developed any infections.

Well, all is looking good. While there is a lot of bruising. The wound is not warm or reddish. The other antibiotic I was thinking I might need was Augmentin.

Thank you for the replies. Seems like Doxycycline and SMZ/TMP did the trick.

I was bit by our cat once when he was scared and didn't know it was me, I was sick for 4 mths. So do not be surprised if you have a difficult time getting rid of this..if it is not hot and bright red, then you are better off, my arm had a lot of discoloration for a long time, bruising, redness, but it wasn't infectiion.

I'm a doc actually trying to find the recommended antibiotic for this...puncture wound from rooster spurs is a new one to me! Not an easy one to find answers in my medical journals lol. Augmentin does appear to be the best answer so far from what I've read. That'd be first choice for dog/cat bites too. But the bactrim+doxy I could see working well too (perhaps for the penicillin-allergic). Also don't forget to get your tetanus vaccine updated!!
