I am so sorry that this has happened to Dear Sophie. I just want you to know that i will Pray that you make the best decision for Her, and that you can be at Peace whatever you decide. Best wishes for her speedy recovery. I have 5 Cochins and I Love them Dearly.
Sorry, I've been offline for a few days. The radiologist vet said that she would have to have 3 treatments a week for 4 weeks (12 treatments total). To compound the problem, Sophie has a respitory problem that our avian vet said could pose a problem with recovering from anesthia. She said that there is a chance Sophie might not respond well to going under. Each radiology treatment would require her to go under. I don't want to take that risk 12 times. I've talked to our avian vet again. It sounds like she'll do the amputation, but is concerned with the quality of life that Sophie will have with a stump. As it is right now, she doesn't use the leg too much, except to get up and down. I'm concered that if they take too much off the foot that it would make it difficult for her to be mobile. I'm also concerned that if they don't take enough, the cancer could reoccur. The avian vet said that she is not aware of any prostethics for chickens. I did some research online and found an article on a chicken prosthetic (see http://www.oandp.com/edge/issues/articles/2006-01_09.asp). There's contact info on the guy who designed the prostethic and I've already emailed him to ask for any info he might have. I've also send the link to my avian vet to see what she thinks. I know we need to do something soon because I can see that Sophie isn't feeling herself lately. The avian vet said that we should wait to see if we hear back from the prosthetic guy on Monday. I don't know how much the amputation would cost - or the prosthetic for that matter. Thinking about putting her down just rips me apart. As things stand right now, it doesn't look like life will be much better for her with an amputation and no prosthetic. I just pray that we are able to figure something out and quickly. Thanks to all of you for your kind words and understanding.
there is a post here about someone who rescued some chickens, and some of them had their toes, and even some of their feet off..either due to wire injury,, infection, or whatever..
a couple of them had stumps for both feet..there are pics in the thread..
but the chickens were shown standing and walking..
Is there any chance that the area could be injected with cisplatin or a similar type agent? I know there are newer drugs out as well. That approach was used successfully on our stallion who had a large and aggressive growth on his chest that was partially excised and then injected several times, and knock on wood. so far so good.
Good luck with everything.....
