squatting chicken

One of my 17 week old Marans start the 'squat' a week and a half ago, I thought eggs were coming soon. But of course not, crazy me is going out to the coop 5 times a day looking. *sigh*

One of my Lt Brahma pullets does this already but she's only 11 wks old. She couldn't be ready to lay already could she?

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one.

I have the very same problem as Jasmine1998.

I'm just wondering, will this upset the whole scheme of things? Seems that they would rather squat for me over the rooster.

I feel so violated when they do this. There are only about 5 out of 22 that are really bad about it. I just shake their tails a little and they think they got lucky..... Should I just ignore them when they squat or is it ok to give them the satisfaction?

I have BO and BR that have been squatting for weeks...the BR's have red faces! Two of the BR laid this week...just went out and found a softshell egg that broke when it was laid, most likely a new layer and looked to be the color that the BR lay so might have been the 3rd hen that did not lay yesterday after pacing and trying out all 5 of the nesting boxes but did not lay.

By that you mean a pat on the back....

Our sex-links go ga-ga over DH. They jump up in his lap and squat for him. I told him they think he is the ROO since we don't have one.

They squat for me if I point at them or reach to pick them up. I give them a back massage and they ruffle their feathers and seem to be happy.

I like when they drum their little chicken feet when they squat. I stroke their tails a few times then they ruffle their feathers and walk away. Funny chickens. I don't like to think of it as a mating stance. I like to imagine they just love me- not they want me to "love" them. One of my BR never did squat but has started laying eggs this week.

I mean I sort of hold them right behind their wings and wiggle them a little. I do not hurt or molest them in any way.

Funny thing, after I posted this, I was outside with them. Again, one came over and squatted for me. The rooster saw this and was close enough that he at first just grabbed her by her comb. So she came back over to me, I got her to squat again, and told Freddie to jump on. He did! I've done it twice now. I get them to squat and he jumps on and does his rooster duty!

So wierd....
