Squirrels are sure eating a lot of chicken food!

This has a simple fix. Your birds free range, so they have access to food continually. Just feed once a day each evening after they have foraged all day and only feed what they can clean up in one feeding. This leaves nothing to attract rodents and saves you on feed like crazy. Trust me...no squirrel is going to get near that feeder when your hens trample him on their way to the feeder each evening!

I've been feeding like this for years and it really is the best way for free rangers and for feed saving. A leaner bird lays better anyway, so they have no need of continuous feed in their beaks at all times. Even penned birds do well on just twice a day feedings.

Thank you, that is great information! Makes a lot of sense that if you only feed the chickens what they need then there won't be anything left to attract rodents.

Though Bella is quite adorable and I think I need to get me one of her also!

It doesn't hurt! I have a not so pretty as Bella version....Jake.

He keeps more than the squirrels away, so he's golden to me!

I have cardinals, blue jays and robins taking a lot of chicken food too.. it doesn't really bother us though... crazy a squirrel is eating yours, we have squirrels around but i never seen them eat the food. i seen wild birds eat my chicken's food only.
