This has a simple fix. Your birds free range, so they have access to food continually. Just feed once a day each evening after they have foraged all day and only feed what they can clean up in one feeding. This leaves nothing to attract rodents and saves you on feed like crazy. Trust me...no squirrel is going to get near that feeder when your hens trample him on their way to the feeder each evening!
I've been feeding like this for years and it really is the best way for free rangers and for feed saving. A leaner bird lays better anyway, so they have no need of continuous feed in their beaks at all times. Even penned birds do well on just twice a day feedings.
