Squirrels

One or two squirrels aren't hard to stop with a ratproof chicken feeder but a mob of squirrels, you are going to find squirrels trapped in the feeder so be sure you have an easy way to mount and dismount the feeder (french cleat is great) and have a plan to remove the critter.

I am working on a feeder that will stop a pack of squirrels as the door itself is impossible to open unless the treadle is depressed. They could figure that out if they would take turns holding down the treadle while the others eat. But cooperation isn't likely going to last long.

They don't usually go after our chicken coop feeder cause people here are constantly feeding them all kinds of crap. They are quite fond of eating the neighbors garbage and leaving things like old nasty half-chewed slices of pizza and rotten fruit on our yard. They have also chewed nearly all the tops off our wood privacy fence and messed with a lot of our most precious trees and plants
Like rats, they are.

Lately the squirrels just seem to keep on freaking me out here, man. I try getting rid of them but next thing I know another 1 or 10 friggin move in.

Have you contacted your local fish & wildlife? Maybe they can help?
They haven't and probably won't do squat. They're proud of having too many squirrels. I do wish I had found the one rabid squirrels body from last weekend though, so that I could have at least gotten it examined and checked out to see if it had rabies or anything but we have not yet seen it around at all since that night.

My town is like that too. The black squirrel is our unofficial mascot. But I don’t think anyone’s been attacked fortunately.

I had a cat show up back in April. Her ear is clipped, so she's been spayed. Doesn't bother my 3 chickens at all. Best thing is she's sweet to us, but a panther to others. A week or so ago she ate a baby squirrel in less than 5 minutes. It was a sight to see and not a morsel was dropped - efficient pest control! I rewarded her the next day with her favorite, a scrambled egg šŸ˜† We love her even more now that she kills & eats tree rats!

Update: Still squirrels everywhere. Yup. This one just walked by:

It's all good for now tho cause no weird stuff has happened since the last time but I can't help but not trust them anymore LOL

They live in our giant Elm trees, mess with our Silver Maple tree, gardens and ate all the peaches off our peach trees this year.
This is the problem I have with squirrels. I have waged war on them for years and have almost none nesting on my property but every morning and evening they flock to my place wreaking havoc on my fruit trees. I get very little fruit from peache, pear, apples trees (thankfully They haven't developed a taste for citrus or I would be doomed). They will start "tasting" the fruit when about 1" size. Taking one bite and dropping it on the ground. By the time the fruit is ripe there is very little left on the tree. About the only time I have ever gotten a decent crop is when I have gone to war with them in the fall. And might I add, providing a tasty meal or three of squirrel dumplings or fried squirrel Now that i am retired I may be able to get a handle on the thievery!
