St. Patty's Day Green Egg Hatchalong, Set 2/25

Well it appears that the chicken taking the eggs out of the nest was on of my Marans hens. I caught her in the act of eating one of the eggs today while the mama was off the nest! I don't know what to do about her now. I've gotten it set up now so the only chickens that can get in to the coop with the nest are the mama and her sister, they are to only banties I have thank god, so I made the door opening very small by putting a cinder block in front of it. Do any of you have experience with egg eaters? My husband wants to cull her, but I only have 2 Marans at the moment and I am loath to get rid of a hen in her prime.

Candled all of my eggs again.

Out of 48, I could detect movement in all but 2. One was a really dark shelled khaki. I could barely see into it. The other was one of my green eggs. I looked in it for at least five minutes and didn't see any movement. Seems like a lot of albumen for Day 14, too.

Stuck it back in and will recheck at Day 18.

ETA: Bought teeny tiny zip ties from the feed store today. Three different colors to mark which chicks came from where.

Oh no! Egg eaters are the worst! I hope you figure it out, I would say at the very least, separate her from your other hens before she teaches them.

Egg eaters are the worst! It's a really hard habit to un-train. I don't know if this will help, but I've noticed my chickens are more likely to eat eggs if they're thirsty. Last year I had a chicken that ate eggs anytime the waterer valve got stuck. It took me a while to make the connection, but after I replaced the waterer, the egg eating stopped.

Quote: x2 The egg eaters we have had seem to be the lowest on the pecking order and roo and other hens are not letting her get to the food and water without harrassment. I found if I have more than one place for food and water, she leaves the eggs alone. It is a very hard habit to kick and very easy for others to learn from. Wishing you luck!

Thanks guys. So far she hasn't started eating her own eggs so hopefully it was just a convince thing with the eggs in the nest. It grosses me out that there was a growing chick in the egg she ate. Eww.

Can't wait for hatch day though!!! Hopefully all three of the remaining eggs will hatch and all of them will be girls!
