Well, i have a hen named Blondie who I have been fighting for several months now. She is always going broody, but our roosters were not old enough until recently, so we had no fertile eggs. Well, a week or two ago, long story short, I found her sitting on a nest under my carport. The worst nest I've ever seen lol. It was made of leaves, but not very many, and it was on asphalt. There were several broken and cracked eggs. Blondie is pretty fierce, she refuses to be bred by the roosters, so I knew chances of her eggs being fertile were slim to none. Our easter eggers however, are big pushovers. There were about 12 brown eggs under her and 3 green eggs. I did not know for sure how long they had been there, but it had been at least one week. I did not have high hopes for their fertility.

I took all the brown eggs and cracked them open, not one was fertile. I decided to take my chances with the green eggs. I put the 3 green eggs back under her, along with 9 more green eggs for a grand total of one dozen. Well, turns out every last one of them is fertile. I have them all marked so I know which 3 are older. These 3 older eggs should hatch somewhere around wednesday of next week if not a little before, the remaining 9 should hatch saturday the 19th.

My question is, should I remove those 3 chicks as soon as they hatch so that she will remain on the nest with the remaining 9 eggs? Has anyone had a staggered hatch like this that can give me any pointers? If push came to shove I'd rather lose the 3 than the 9, but I'd rather lose none.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

***UPDATE***

the one chick hatched today while I was at work, I was hoping the catch them while almost out of the shell, or still wet, but this one was already dry and fluffy, we promptly removed her from the nest.

What do you think the chances of her getting OFF the nest are, even with this chick removed? I just don't know if it was under her long enough to trigger her thinking she needs to get up and care for the baby, even if it is gone? Do you think she will sit on the remaining eggs until they hatch??

How long do you think I should wait after they hatch to remove them? I don't want to remove them too early or too late! Should I let them dry then take them out, or move them to a warm brooder asap after they come out of their shell? I will have a little "mama heating pad" set up for them because I have used this in the past with such success, so hopefully that will suffice until they are on their feet enough to move to the brooder with my other chicks.

Will do!! Thanks! I'm nervous I'm gonna screw something up or that they will hatch earlier than expected! I keep checking them daily. It has been a loooong time since I had a broody hatch any chicks (well other than one that hatched out one chick that died last year), but I think Blondie is going to be an eggs-cellent mom! I will have to share once our babies get here! I am starting to get giddy with excitement!

THanks! I am going today to purchase an actual egg candler... we have been using a black and decker flashlight to candle the eggs, but its oddly shaped and its hard to make a seal around it to get a good look at the egg without being blinded in the process. Hopefully I can keep an eye on them over the next week and catch them before it's too late. I already have my mama heating pad brooder set up for a couple of teeny tiny bantam babies that needed some TLC, so it's ready to go as soon as the other babies get here! I am very excited to see what these babies are going to look like, it's like christmas in March for me right now lol.

Oh that sounds like so much fun! I remember my FFA days, I had a blast until it was time to eat my bunnies LOL. My pullets were supposed to be "ameraucanas" but of course, they are just easter egger mutts I'm afraid. Nonetheless, I really love their coloring. I have a big beautiful blue ameraucana rooster (Not 100% sure if he is purebred or not, but he looks like it, got him from a fairly reputable breeder) and I am hoping our chicks have lots of grey in them, for some reason I just love that coloring. We also have what is supposed to be a wheaten ameraucana rooster.... but I fail pretty hard at telling the difference between easter eggers and ameraucanas

so.... who knows. Regardless, we have some beautiful girls and boys that will hopefully make some beautiful chicks!

I got my egg candler so tonight I will be taking a little peep at the babies. However, it has literally been 15+ years since I incubated any eggs, so I need to go brush up on what all to start looking for since I'm not 100% certain of the hatch day for the 3 oldest eggs. If anyone feels so inclined as to enlighten me some, it would be appreciated lol! But I am off to go do some research for myself until then haha. Thanks for your input chicklover!

Your welcome, and It has been about 9 years since I incubated eggs so I'll have to brush up a little too, my mom took care of an elderly lady and her hair dresser had a bunch of chickens, so she gave me about 7 eggs and a little incubator, first try hatched out 6 chicks.
