We have 9 week pullets in a raw pine coup. Some of it is venier bead board. I know we need to protect it or its going to warp badly. I want to go with a natural stain and keep the natural look, no paint, except maybe the window frame. Do I need to put a conditioner on it first? I'd like to prevent the uneven absorption of the stain and most importantly not hurt the pullets. I really don't have an alternative place to put them, except the garage for a few days maybe a week.
Your best advise is appreciated. Thank you so much.

Ive done mine while in birds are there. Of course, its been during the day, and they've been in their runs.... but, Ive never even thought it would hurt them. They have never had any ill effects.... but I guess that doesnt mean its good for them I guess. But then, mines been work is outside only, not staining inside. I also use a sprayer for the majority of it.
I think they will be ok. It dries very quickly too. Im re-doing in a couple of weeks as well.

Thank you. I don't plan on doing the inside ever. Did you just do straight stain? one coat or two?

I'm gonna say from experience, stain does not deter carpenter bees. If I could have a do-over I'd use paint! I know I've seen TSC sell "poultry safe" coop paint!

UGH! Carpenter bees!

I haven't thought about those vial creatures and my coop. They have basically destroyed my children's playhouse/now my storage shed with their holes. Stain nor paint stops them, only one of those mason jar bumble bee traps or my personal favorite a tennis racket.
Thank God that my walls are treated plywood, it's the 1x4 untreated strips I have to worry about.

Not even sure about the mason jar traps... husband made 7....
hes caught 2
First year or three very few would get trapped, but I tennis racket killed a few and then put them inside the mason jar. Seemed to attract them. Think I captured around 12 of them this year with equal amounts with the tennis racket killed. We had a really nice cool front during March - May in South Carolina that drove them away/killed and didn't see many.
