Standard Cochin Questions?

You will need to perform a degree of inbreeding to accomplish what you are wanting to do. I would recommend purchasing large mottled males and breeding them to the largest bantam mottled hens you can find try Matt McCammon or Jamie Matts (Jamie has both) (Matt has bantams). This way you do not lose the good mottling and you can breed your offspring pullets back to a Mottled male to rapidly increase the size. Elton Minnich also raises some excellent large mottleds but I am not sure if he still has them. Mottleds are not a standardized breed yet and as such cannot be placed above "best of variety". There was a qualifying meet several years ago but not enough breeders or birds were present to get the variety considered by the APA. Bantam mottleds are APA/ABA Standardized.
I know a large male can breed a bantam because I have 14 1/2 large black X 1/2 bantam birchen cochin chicks right now that are the result of natural breeding. Try it this way and in 5 generations you should have good size and good mottled color and maybe some of that excellent bantam shape with the excellent large fowl heads. Wow! that would be a beautiful sight.

Agree with Bo that you would be best to go with Bantam Mottled and Large Fowl Mottled, but if you can get ahold of Large Mottled to start with then you wouldn't need to do the cross assuming you could get a pair.

I agree with Cochinman on alot or all of what he said. I have some experience with Cochins but nothing like him for sure.
As a side note for Tom, I cant tell you how many times I have looked at your page of your Cochin accomodations. I am still waiting for an update of how some of those structures ended up. I need to message you soon about some of the symantics so to speak of keeping LF Cochins, especially ones that you want to show.
I was mistaken in saying the Mottled were admitted by the APA, I was thinking of the bantams variety not the LF.
Also Tom are you still raising White Minorcas?

Oh my - I would LOVE some blue barred standards!

Such a pretty color, and there'd be a lot of it on those big fluffy birds.

Hey all, i just wanted to ask how tall a Lrg.Cochin gets? I've got a few Banty size and enjoy them so much I wanted some biggies but the descriptions never mention how tall they are. Cant wait to get them and play with colors a bit & see what I may create.

Males can be up to your knees as far as height. However, tall Cochins without the body to go with them aren't Cochins. They're just tall feather legged chickens. You still have to have the breed type.
