Pretty much what I've been saying, I think.

Haha, I'm with you there- I love raising my birds, but this winter has been great. I killed my old layers with my meaties last fall, and I've been chicken free ever since! It's nice not to have to wade through the snow to de-ice a water trough for birds that aren't even producing eggs because it's too darned cold! Now that spring is coming though, I can't wait.

Absolutely nothing, Boss. Absolutely nothing.

I'm just suggesting that breeding and raising meat chickens from eggs is a fine choice and not the tedious chore you generally make it out to be. You often talk about it like it is some sort of disadvantage of a heritage breed versus the Cornish X. It isn't unless you don't really like working with chickens. Lots of folks on here keep their chickens year round. For us, a bird like the standard Cornish or Buckeye or Delaware is an excellent choice.

After 6 decades of raising chickens ( and loving every step of the way) following my Veterinarian father's and my mother' and grandmother's flock and methods and hitting a brick wall trying to improve on my flock's genetics, therefore their performance. I decided that it was much less painful to switch rather than do the same things and expect a different result. I found a way to feed me and my family for a lot less effort and still enjoy my life long love of raising chickens. I choose to spend more time with my family that I save by switching to a new and better way of doing things for me. You choose to raise what you want , well good for you and good luck. I hope that you have success.

"Better" is most definitely a matter of perspective.

As to the rest, I wish the same to you and yours.

My birds are not only better than your birds, they are SUPERIOR to yours as one of them is merrily soaking away in a marinade and is soon to be the honored guest for tonight's Bar B Que while the rest of them are bundled up at freezer camp. My wife and I are slowly sipping away on a hot buttered rum enjoying the Olympics on TV and a nice fire in the fireplace!!! It's beer o'clock somewhere!

Well, like I said, "better" depends on perspective. I'm already collecting fertile eggs from my meat birds and will begin incubating a batch soon. Others will be hatched out by broody mothers.

Some of those meat birds won't get as big as your CX, but they will taste a lot better, and some will get both bigger and taste better. And they will all come from my own back yard system. I will be ordering in some birds, but I don't have to. My system is sustainable without it.

So, again, it is all about perspective. For you, your birds would be superior, as they would be for a lot of folks. For me, not so much.

Enjoy your beer.
