Standard of Perfection Wanted

My personal experience with a lot of breeders, the Rhode island red club of America...the livestock conservancy...the American poultry association and some other organizations is that they only want to sell the book or their memberships and nothing more...I have asked for additional information on breed specifics, pictures of winning animals etc with no good feedback or answers from anyone...until I found this amazing website full of valuable threads and discussions...but that is MY experience

I'm guessing that's the one that all the "historical significance" copies are being printed from. The APA enforces their copyright without prejudice, so anything out there isn't just out of copyright, it's no longer valid, because they basically re-up the copyright every time a new addition is published. Just looking at a few pages I can tell you that old one is way out of sync with the current version.

But, for anyone wanting to buy one but able to wait... the next version should be published in 2022, and from what I've seen personally and heard from others, there are some major and sweeping across-the-board changes coming. I know changes were still being hashed out with some breed clubs as late as October of 2021, so I'm not sure if they'll make it in time to publish in 2022 or not.

I regularly hit up used bookstores, estate sales, and Goodwill looking for older copies. Most of what I find on eBay are newer versions that cost more with shipping than buying the latest version direct from the APA.

Some hatcheries and poultry supplies also sell it and the ABA standard (and mini!). So that's worth looking into if you're already making an order.

And last, but not least, ask around in your breed clubs. They're more likely to have extra copies floating around than most other chicken owners.
But someday I'll buy the current version of the book. That I assure you

Your experience is not unique, unfortunately. It's getting harder to find friends and mentors that are passionate about the breed itself, instead of their glory or profit. To some extent, I understand; there has been an influx of breeders who are totally in it for the money, and hatcheries creating new fancy hybrids to cater to the "shiny new toy" crowd. Raising show poultry is inherently competitive, and everyone seems to want something for nothing, so I can't fault them for that, but I agree that the number of memberships, annual fees, etc. is getting out of hand, when there are few rewards for those investments and it's just basically pay-to-play.

My intent was not to insult you for using the online one, my beef is with the myriad of online sellers that are printing it out and trying to pass it off as official (and charging accordingly). For people that have never seen one or don't really know what they're looking for, it's a pretty crappy experience to get taken like that. I've noticed those books popping up across genres, I think due to Google's project Gutenberg, and having a bit of a background in open source software, it just ticks me off.

I'd also like to say that it sucks how Puerto Rico is treated in so many areas. I'm sorry. I never found an APA Standard in my wanderings, although I did find an ABA one for a reasonable price, but if I ever run across one, I'll try to remember to PM and see if you still need it. I am going to look up something I ran across and PM you that I think might help.

Thanks so much...no offense taken. I'm a hard skinned ugly boy...I got your point from the start of your reply...and it's true. I've seen this copy I posted been sold as an actual ruling version of said book. Crazy! And I agree with you about the exotic and rare breeds taking over the real means of breeding productive and standard stock. It's crazy how almost everyone likes a frizzled feather before a good framed bird or a good 200 eggs a year...but it's happening all over. In here it's the bantam fever... I've been a good online student and have found some really good sources of genetics information, some decent standard and breed specific articles and researches...and this page I'm loving so much! Any info you could bring later on would be greatly appreciated by me and anyone looking at the threads.

Also many thanks for understanding and comprehending the struggle we are going through as a nation.! Not everyone is capable of empathy this past days. I hope you all too as another brother nation In distress can unite and overcome any tyranny or corruption happening there. Many territories around the world would be greatly benefited if that happens

In here we have traditional cock fighting made illegal by Congress but we still do it...and we have some of the best and proven stock that is actually battle bred and fully tested.
