standard poodles vs labs

What everyone else said, but be aware, Standard Poodles can be EXTREMELY protective of their place or person. I had one and a friend that had won the European Schuhtzund Agitator whatever award came over to visit and burst out laughing I had gotten a standard poodle, a rescue around eighteen months. He started messing with the dog and did some testing and just was blow away, and I was blown away when he told me that dog tested higher for Schuhtzund potential than most German imports. He was not intimidated, was forgiving, laid back, had big prey drive, blah blah blah... I forget all what he said. It was ten years ago, but just be aware that under all that fluff might be the equivalent potential of an untrained protection dog. Get it trained. The coat, not a big deal. Learn to use clippers and just keep them stripped. Only takes about a half hour every couple months. The no-shed factor is da BOMB!!!

Half an hour to clip a standard?

It takes me 1-3 hours to clip my miniature poodle, depending how I clip it. Haha.

Avla, a trained groomer with the right equipment and a regularly cared for poodle - Yeah, about a 1/2 hour. I could even do a nice Town and Country clip back when I was doing them all the time. If you wanted the face and feet to have that tight shave (maybe a little moustache for the boys) then about another 15 minutes. A poodle who's owners brush it between religiously kept appointments is a joy to groom.
One day I'll talk DH into one and I'll have so much fun "sculpting" that coat.
LOL, maybe I'll show him onthespot's post!

The original poster just asked about "service dogs". Without more information as to what she means by that, I do not think it makes sense to restrict replies only to guide dogs (which are just one type of service dog)

Pat

I answered for a whole list of services but was specific about guides because of the one difference. *shrug*

FireTigeris was right on the mark. That's something really really specific that a seeing eye dog MUST have. It's pretty unlikely that anyone typing on as computer needs one, but they could be info gathering. There are many kinds of service dogs that can be owner trained, but I think that a seeing eye dog can only be trained by a very few licensed facilities unless there have been changes I don't know about.

I would just point out that there are two types of labs, as well. There is the hunting type and the show type. The show type is a smaller, blockier and calmer dog, generally, than the hunting type lab. The hunting type, especially the males, can be huge, and their puppy years seem longer. Most backyard breeders are going to that hunting type labs. Show style dogs are broader headed and deeper chested as well. Growing up, we had both types. To me, the hunter type seemed more pig-headed, but it might have been the individual dog.

There is a reason labs have been one of the most popular dogs in America for decades.

Actually the two types are English and American labs. The English labs are the stouter types and the American labs are leggier. Both can run from 50-110lbs regardless if they hunt or show. I have friends that raise and breed both types.

Interesting, I wanted to get into dog grooming and I've practiced on my poodle a few times.
We have clippers (probably not the best ones) but we do it ourselves and I am kinda slow.

In those few hours though, that includes a bath, brushing, blow drying, etc.

I'd love to find a standard white poodle to put over our Golden Retriever. My kids found a breeder with a papered GR, but I hate the shedding (I'm allergic to her) and don't want our next dog to make me sneeze.

I know someone with one. He is TALL and very nice temperament. They raise doodles too, so they wouldn't snob you out. They are in Norco, 92860. Let me know if you are willing to travel to breed.

i agree with the others, although i have to say i love labs and goldens (had both) however theyre both good dogs, our neighbor has a french poodle, and our friend has a labradoodle and we know several dogs, all great dogs and both dogs can be good dogs if properly trained, however as with any dog, if left untrained they can become a nuisance and potential hazard but theyre both great dogs and i like both but i think im gonna have to go with labs on this one just cause ive had a lab before and know several and all were/are great
