Started a coop in West Virginia

Howdy Vehve,

I have not had a chance to work on it. I had to mow and get the potatoes planted. Still have more things to plant. Right now garden takes priority. Here is a picture of me and our two kids and the neighbors on "tater day".

I can't wait for chicken day.

Hi Mike,

Here's our potato experiment. Not quite as big as yours...

I would suggest the drain pipes. I built our coop on a spot where water passes through, it's been pouring for a week now and the top soil in the run is barely moist.

Howdy Vehve,

I may have to put drain pipes in. Currently I have a large brush pile on top of what I believe is the head of the spring. I do this because the fire won't easily get away from me when I burn it. So I will burn it, then poke and dig to see if I can locate the head. I will dig the head out to see if I can improve flow and put a pipe in. Someday I will build a spring house if it flows good.

I do have an abandoned 8' satellite dish that I may turn into a small pond right in the run.

First I have to build the coop, then I will mess around with the other stuff.

I looked at your Scandin-Avian Coop. Very nice set up you have. If mine turns out half as good I will be happy. What kind of chickens are you raising and what kind of shingles are those on the roof of the coop?

Hey Mike,

We've got one Marans pullet, two Marans-Araucana roos and a pullet and a pair of Sussexes, pullet and roo right now. Also we're gonna fetch three Finnish Alho hens next week.

The roof is bitumen. Basically a bit like asphalt. Easy to install and I like the way it looks.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm quite pleased with it myself.

Howdy Folks,

I have not had time to do much building. When I get a day off it rains. Kind of depressing sometime because I can look right out the window and see the spot. Its only a matter of time before my luck changes though and I can get after it. I did get a 2 X 6 floor mostly framed up and I got some pressure treated 1 X 6 boards from my brothers neighbor who is re-decking his porch.

I have not even burned the brush pile yet. Its going to take longer than I thought at this rate but I will get it done.

I have been watching the canadian geese at work raise their little ones. Amazing how fast they grow.
