Starter crumbles vs. pellets question

I tried the Layena pellets, but they were really too big for my bantam adults, so I switched to Nutrena layer pellets which are smaller, that I can feed both my large fowl and my bantams, and they make less of a mess with the feeder, since I switched to pellets.

I agree mixing what you have left with the pellets is a good idea.

I think you can switch over to layer as they are very close to when they should start laying. I use medicated Starter/Grower. I feed it to the birds until I get my first egg then I switch over to Layer. If I have any Starter/Grower or Grower left over when I get my first egg, I mix in the leftover feed with the Layer feed. I have never had any problems. The amprollium in the Starter or Starter/Grower helps in the chicks development in their resistance to cocci. It is sulfa based. There is only a problem eating the eggs layed by the birds that have had the medicated feed when they start to lay if you have any allergies to Sulfa. I do use pellets as I find the birds waste less.

I'm always surprized to read that people feel pellets are too large for bantams. I have bantam Hamburgs and Vorwerks and the hens only weigh about 20 ounces and they have no problem with it.

I have three 11 week old LF chicks, in their bag of pheasant crumbles(gamebird) I found a pellet that made it though the crumbling process a week or two ago. Out of curiosity, I threw it out into the yard and watched. All three attempted it, but they never managed to get it down; I ended up snapping it into thirds and they ate it. At that age, they were likely about the same size as a bantam hen, maybe even larger.
