Starting a batch tomorrow 1/25 anyone want to join me? Valentine hatch-along!

Candled again last night, lost one more egg. It was definitely a mid-incubation quitter, all the veins were gone and it was just a big dark blotch in the yolk. So now we're down to 20 eggs and today is the halfway point! :)

Well I went through today and candled and removed 10 eggs today and I opened all of them and I was so proud I was right. I would have been devastated if I had been wrong! I had only 2 not fertilized and 8 had blood rings so I'm assuming they just didn't develop. So, now I am down to 34 eggs. I have

6 Rouen
8 Frizzle
9 RIR
11 Americauna's (I only tossed 2 of these, but couldn't see through the rest)

SOOOO Now we're down to the nitty gritty only 8 days left!!!

I also have PUPPIES due on February 22 EEEEK I'M CRAZY!!

^ Oooooh, puppies!!!!

I had a weird, miraculous and stunningly disastrous hatch last weekend. The eggs were silent as the grave on hatch day Sunday, so on Monday morning I assumed they were dead and opened the top of one to see what went wrong. The inner membrane was dry, but to my surprise, the chick was moving! It was the same for every single egg, except for two that had quit. In every previous set of eggs I have had, none lived past day 21 if it didn't hatch. I had called in sick with the flu, so I had the whole day to baby them with regular moistening. They lived for two more days in this way. One chick did hatch on Tuesday with help, but due to some unknown glitch in my incubator, the temperature got reset to 64 degrees sometime during the night and he died. The rest of the babies also died, most hadn't even turned so their heads were at the top of the egg. I never lost electricity or had a previous temperature freak-out in the incubator, so it is a mystery to me how those babies survived so long beyond hatch day without pipping to breathe.

I have another batch due tomorrow - Russian Orloff, some mutts, and bantam frizzle Cochin. This time I have split the eggs between my Genesis and my Brinsea Mini in hopes that one will get the job done right! Supposedly we're having a very bad storm tonight that may cause power outage. I've got blankets standing by to insulate those incubators in case we lose power, but really hoping we won't!

The post office had two new packages for me today - a box of 13 Dark Cornish eggs and a box of 15 Crele Polish project eggs! I'll be setting them tomorrow evening.

Tallies for Valentine's hatch:
5 out of 13 Russian Orloff
9 out of 9 Yokohama
3 out of 5 Ohiki
8 out of 14 Sizzle
2 out of 7 Blue Slate Turkey

Yeah the same storm is heading my way, too. Good luck with your power, I have a batch in the incubator that are on day 13, so I worry about an extended outage. We have a generator, but it only runs a few things at a time. We'd have to move the incubator around constantly as we switch between outlets to power, heh. So I'll cross my fingers for you if you cross your fingers for me!

I hope everyone made it through the storm good and didn't lose power. So we are now close to our lockdown time. I believe we will do it on the 10th or do we wait until the 11th? Anyone!?!?! This is my first hatch. I am down to 29 eggs from orginal 50 that were started. How is everyone else doing? I set aside 6 that I believe are no good. They are still in the bator, but I put them to the side to see if I was right!

The worst of the storm is still on its way for me, overnight tonight and into the morning. Lockdown is usually day 18 so for me that's the 12th. I'll fire up the hatcher on the 11th and get it stable. However, I go less by the date and more by the weight of the eggs for timing things. If they're close to target weight on day 18, then I put them into lockdown. If they still have some weight to lose, I wait until they are closer to target to put them into lockdown. I've still got 20 out of the original 24 that look good. I'll be candling and weighing again tonight!

Well hopefully you won't get hit too bad. By the hatcher what do you mean do you use a different incubator to hatch? I'm new to all of this and still learning. I also didn't weigh my eggs so I have no clue what they need to lose or not! Mine were shipped eggs so I'm at 50% which I'm thinking isn't too bad lol! Especially if all of those are actually viable and hatch I will be glad for my first experience!
