Starting out with goats... Need all the help I can get! Goatlovers!!!

Most goats can be left alone during the day - I leave for work in the morning and come home in the evening and the goats stay in their pen all day

as to what breed is good for you -- either a dairy breed mixed with a meat goat (so as was stated a %meat goat) or a straight meat (boer, Kiko, spanish) goat would fit your needs.

A pygmy is a meat goat but they are smaller (max of 23 inches at the withers) and if you like cute small goats then a pygmy or pygmy mix would be a good breed but their abilities to do heavy labor are more limited but dont let them fool you they are STRONG buggers. Very stubborn little things.

This made me laugh:p It's so true! My smallest little Nigerian Pygmy wether is my highest leaper! I have no doubt that if he wanted to he could clear the 5.5' fence. Thankfully he is happy with his little herd and hasn't wanted to leave us.

Well, I'm sure others can offer a much more educated opinion but I've found that all five of my goats are picky eaters. I cannot rely on them to clear an area neatly.

They are browsers so they graze and walk, pick and walk. They've helped me clear up some wild roses but leave the thistles alone...and so on.
