You should get Plymouth Barred Rocks. The Plymouth Barred Rock is a great beginner chicken in my opinion, because they are very nice, and are good egg layers. I will recommend getting six or so chicks to start with, so you can get to know them.

And barred rocks seem to be one of the lesser manipulated to burn out fast from what I've read. Even with barred rocks there will be different dispositions from flock to flock but I truly believe if I had to start fresh again Barred rocks would be included.
