Steel Cut Oats

Hi all! My mother-in-law works at a cereal plant, and has given me pounds upon pounds of steel cut (sometimes called Irish) oats for our chickens. Is this OK to mix with their layer crumbles on a daily basis? It's just so appealing to do because it's free! Or, will that mess up the nutritional ratios in the feed, and should only be fed as a treat?
