Mary sounds like a good week! Interesting car discussions.

I, too have never had a new car. BUt I have very special car needs. I have to be able to drive in the carpool lane as when I do on sites, they are 2-4 counties away, on very traffic filled freeways. SO I need a car that can have a white ( permanent) carpool sticker. Since electric cars cant drive far enough for me yet, I have a Natural gas car. They last FOREVER since natural gas is not corrosive on the engine like petroleum. Plus, they are clean, etc.

My Honda has 210,00 miles on it and the engine is still great. It is expensive to change the filters on the thing, and it is coming up on mandatory retirement unless new gas tanks get less expensive in 2 years, but its a trooper. And Natural Gas does not go over 2.20 a gallon.....

Do you have a unit in your house to fill the tank?

no. They are not subsidized in Northern California and so they don't pay for themselves. And if they break ( and they DO) you have to send it to Europe to get fixed. Plus, the San Jose rep for the tanks has a bad reputation, so I only left 2 messages and gave up.

Someone in the US was making one , but they never emailed me about it being ready to sell retail. If they ever get that id do it. Then its like 50 cents or so per gallon...

There are a lot of very un usual cars and suvs in Davis. There is research going in here. I even saw a Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle on the Quad one day.

CNG is an older technology so it should be cheaper. When I worked for Safeway, they used Propane engines on the floor buffer. It smelled weird but was safe to breath the air.

oh thats interesting! we are not that far from Tesla. I see a fair few of them driving around here, but they do not have fill up stations on my usual routes yet. Plus, they are a bazzilion dollars and we are still house poor. And, then there is the debate about if coal fueled electricity is "cleaner" anyway. I have not seen any analysis about if CNG or electric is truly cleaner in our area. It is debatable in a lot of places.

Id drive a hydrogen cell car! I have never been in hitting or being hit accident. Just crazy things like exploding tires and crazy hoods...

There is a Department here called Transportation Studies. They are the folks that Schwarzenegger took his picture with when he announced the Hydrogen filling stations years ago. They are supposed to build 2000 of them using our auto registration fees. It mus be one of those build it and they will come tings. Hyundai is selling the first Retail fuel cell cars in Norway or one of those Scandinavian countries this next year.

ohh are they doing actual storage research? I figure that is the most important problem of our time. We can talk about the viability of almost any natural power source, and unless we can store it well enough, we won't be able to really sue it except as a supplement. I think it will be the next world changing breakthrough, if anyone can do it...
