We have red fox here. I have only seen one once in my yard. I didn't even think we had them here until I saw him!

We are sort of homebound this morning. The power pole up the road was knocked down again last night for the fifth time in 7 months so the road out is closed for six more hours. Guy distracted by a cell phone of course. I'll use the time to get some of the food prepped for Thursday.

Oh dear. They need to do something about that! Maybe a steel guardrail? That may save lives. They go nuts around here with the steel guardrails. And they do help.

I wish I had the wherewithall to buy enough of that 2x4 wire to enclose my whole 4 acres. Then i would let them free range some. I love to watch them on green grass, even in the woods they run about so excited. As of now no go for that much wire. Maybe next yr. I can extend their runs for another 50 ft or so into the wooded part of the property back of the house. Then I could set on my back porch and watch them. That would really be nice. I have a peragon falcon, I think, on my property down next to the stream. It is a small hawk like bird so definitely no small babies out and about. I saw it catch small birds much to my displeasure. One was a nesting bluebird right up next to the porch. Thankfully the babies were far enough along that the father took care of them and eventually they left together. They came back later to check the house in the fall. I hate to see animals killed even though I know its part of life.

We do have just over 2 of the 5.37 acres perimeter fenced with livestock fencing and some of the 2x4 welded wire, but that is nothing for a fox, coyote, bobcat or mountain lion. It just seems to keep most of the domestic dogs from getting in or at least, they can't easily run across. The deer sail over it, of course, hooved marauders. We did it one roll at a time as we could afford it so it took awhile, but we did it.

I have a hog wire fence on one side but the human mauraders have pushed it down in so many places that it would be not be effective. I guess i will just start across the back with a tall 6 ft. 2x4wire like I make the chicken fences with. At least the dogs and cyotes won,t come lopping in. I would so love to let them out some. To see them running free is a dream for me right now.

It's been over 2 months so I figured I'd check in.

Still haven't sold the old home. If you are praying person, pray for us to sell it.

We love the new place, schools etc. Just miss my chickens.

I still get e-mails from placed like McMurry, Ideal and My Pet Chicken... I've got to get off of the lists... they just make me sad.

I am enjoying hiking.

On Oct. 30th, an 81 year old ran a red light and T-boned me. It's a long process getting better. Whiplash that causes numbness and burning in my hands.

But I have to thank the good Lord I am still alive and kicking.

Dar, I am glad to see you back, but sorry to hear about the accident. I hope you feel better soon. That is sad but thankfully you weren't hurt any worse. I say a little prayer to the real estate gods that your house sells fast. It is tough having two homes.

Michael enjoys seeing you on Facebook and always lets me know you posted. We sure miss you here. You know My Pet Chicken can ship as few as three pullets. Just sayin'

I free range every couple of days, every day if the weather is nice for at least a few hours, and I have pens, too, but you know foxes, especially the grays. They have no trouble climbing. The bantams are the safest since their pen is covered with 2x4 welded wire.

Yes, the gray foxes (and all foxes really) are excellent climbers. They are usually too smart to trap too. I hope it moves along and leaves you alone.

So good to see you Dar, though I'm sorry to hear you are in pain. I hope the New Year is kinder to you, as you've had a heck of a year this year.

6 foot no climb will keep most critters out harder to climb.
nothing will keep a bear or cougar out though

Thanks Kelly! It's all done. Your guesstimate was almost spot on, except we paid extra for the cracks to be filled. One less worry this winter.
