Michael and I just got back inside from doing the big chicken dance. We moved everybody to their new homes. We now have 38 chickens, but I am going to be hatching. My big coop now houses all my general layers except the Marans and they are in a coop by themselves. Coop 1 is all Icelandics and Coop 2 is now Isi, Lukka and 3 of their Icelandic offspring. I think I will mix those up with the new Icelandics I am a hatching to reduce inbreeding.

There is no noise ordinance for this county, however, if there is a complaint and the sheriff checks it out and finds out the noise "rises to a certain level" he can offer the complainant the right to file a citizen's arrest. The deputy will then cite the offender for the person filing the citizen's arrest. There is a risk in filing a citizen's arrest if the charges are unfounded though. So you have to be willing to face getting sued before you do it.
I did it last summer against the guy blaring the music through outdoor speakers directly up to our house. Despite it being 1:30 in the morning and the noise was deafening, all the deputy did was order the security guard for the gated community to go tell them to turn it down.

I wouldn't risk asking for a "citizen arrest" when the proper authority wasn't willing to cite. Yes, roosters are part of rural life, a good, enjoyable part of it. Most people grow accustomed to common noises around them, it becomes "white" noise.

Mary, I know the loss of money on the other breeds hurts. But, I am so glad you are going to concentrate on Icelandics again, you have done so much for the breed.

Isi is crowing up a storm out there and pacing to get to the rest of his girls, my entire laying flock. They are now housed by themselves without a man to boss them around.
I think things will settle down once everyone gets used to the new housing, roommates and next door neighbors. I'll probably throw out a little extra scratch a couple of times today to keep them occupied.
toss out a couple of cabbage heads. Thee is a lot of cabbage in the stores now and it takes them some work to tear it apart.Thank Mike!

There's much to be said for a rooster-free existence, especially for older hens. We lost Fern during the night. She would have been 5 years old at the beginning of June.
