My last day taking care of Mary's animals.
Today's dilemma was the Brabanter eggs. I checked under Lukka and there were 2 little fluffballs under her. The 3rd egg, the chick tried to hatch but was completely glued in the shell. I have never seen a chick this stuck. This is what it looked like when I found it.
So, I took it over to the hose, and very carefully wet my fingers and dabbed water on the stuck areas and carefully peeled away the shell. I got it all of the way out - it's weak but still has a good chirp to it. Hopefully it will make it. I put it back under Lukka and made sure she was okay with it, which of course she was. Mary is going to check on it as soon as she gets home. There weren't any more pips, and no cheeping, so it looks like the 3 chicks is all that will hatch.
Here are the other 2 Brabanter chicks. They have slightly different coloring, which makes me wonder if they are somewhat sex linked. It's hard to see in the picture because of the light and shade.
I made it through the time Mary was gone without any heads stuck in fences, or escapes.Mary's animals were on their best behavior.![]()
