Stella's Social Club

X2

Tucker looks so comfy. If you really want to see and hear 4-H kids cry you should go to the end of fair auction.

Interesting, I've never thought about chickens getting arthritis.
Chickens get gout too.

And chickens have strokes as well. I've had two hens who had them, one died the next day, one's was more mild and she recovered. Ladyhawk's last remaining daughter out of my late Suede just had stroke and has some partial paralysis (vet confirmed what we both already knew); she will not be with her much longer, we both know.

I could barely hear the 4H kids crying when Kelly told them their pullets were cockerels!

Yes, poor thing is only 3 years old, so should not be age-related. Isn't that usually related to calcium metabolism? Since I keep young birds in with my adults I feed at most 50:50 layer:starter-grower to reduce calcium in their diet, along with free choice oyster shell.

At lunch I went out to the coop to check for eggs (3 times a day in this weather or they freeze solid), and watched her hop up onto the top of the nest box, then painfully settle down over her sore feet. Sorry to say that she may need to be put down, she is not particularly friendly and would not take confinement well, and we are still near the start of our cold weather - winter here lasts into April. Last year we still had snow on the ground on May 1st. One of my least favorite chores, but she is obviously suffering.

It is a uric acid problem and is kidney related--not as much calcium except that calcium can damage the kidneys. There may be diet related things that can help but it may just be a genetic thing like it is in people.

Most males in my family have gout problems. My youngest brother is on medication for it. I am staying away from foods that are bad for it and getting diary at least several times a week. I have not had classic gout but did have some knee inflammation a couple of years ago.

Last week was SOOO COLD it actually hit 20 degrees in my back yard! There was a skiff of ice on top of our pool! ... but yesterday and today and the rest of the week it will be PARADISE.

I did a five mile jog after work today and just LOVED being out in my Phoenix mountains.

I'm hoping an investment comes through for me in March and if it does, THAT'S when I'll put the pressure on my wife and my next door neighbor to give me the OK for chickens again. I've looked at coops and I've decided that I can build my own! It may take me some time, but I'll know everything that I want and so I'll be able to incorporate it into my small coop. I've already got a yes on getting me an Aloha hen... if I have that and perhaps an Icelandic, an Ameraucana and a Marans... and perhaps an exotic polish, I'll be complete.

on that investment.

Six below here this am, wind and wind chill warnings, coop stays closed today!
Brrrrr! That sounds awful!

Everyone stay warm and be careful outside. Especially those of you who are unaccustomed to the cold weather.
Ditto!

Liar! I did no such thing.

I'm sorry, it's never a fun chore, but unfortunately it's necessary sometimes.

I knew we should have sent him eggs last year.

She IS called Loca for a reason Mike.

Wasn't Loca the one that ripped a diamond earring off of a lady?

Nope that was one of the boys. Can't remember which one.
