Stella's Social Club

Oh, Mary, I'm praying you have a good day in hiding... and that you can keep Tucker.

Hard to understand. I know all about these dog "fanatics"... they came into my life once by accident, but it's a LONG story that we've lived through (last year when our Lilly had puppies) , so for now, we'll pray and send good thoughts your way.

Hugs and prayers, Mary and Tucker!

Don't you love the animal crazies out there? I was once given a pair of cats from a cat breeder I bought a pure bred Main Coone from. I got the kitten by air, but we matched up our vacation to meet the lady in Montana to get the others. I guess they were born in place she couldn't get to them soon enough and they were a bit too shy to sell. We met at a hotel and she turned them loose in my car so they wouldn't have to be in their crates all night. She promised they would go back to the crate in the morning. Well I got torn up pretty badly digging one of them out from wiring under my dash board. Turned them loose in my barn when we got home, which is what she wanted. I told her about the incident and she freaked out on me for terrorizing her cats. She then demanded I send them back to her. I replied calmly enough that she was welcome to drive to Iowa and catch them if she wanted, but I was going to feed them with the rest of my barn cats as I agreed and leave them be. She did eventuallly change her mind about the drive, but she was adamant about me being unfit to own cats. Sorry, lady, there is a BIG difference between a standoffish cat and a freaked out wild one. I don't know how she could have raised them to be this way.

BTW Cat scratch fever is quite real and requires a doctor visit and heavy antibiotics. My husband was less than pleased with the whole ordeal. He never thought the term Crazy Cat Lady was such a literal description.

Oh Mary, I am sorry for all your troubles. If you need a place to hide, feel free to come to my house.
I'm also sorry to here about your chicks. That is just awful. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

No problem on the phone call Mary. Call me anytime you need to. I'm glad you are not giving up Tucker without a fight. You are welcome to come hide out at my house too.

I have NEVER had a good experience with animal rescue groups. They are just ridiculous.

I had had a horrible day. I found two of my little 5.5 week old Cream Legbar cockerels paralyzed this morning. One was able to move some but the other could not. I removed them but could not get them to eat or drink. I did some research and a guy who bought cream legbars from the approximate same hatch date as mine posted that one of his arrived sick and the other became sick the following week. I was in a panic about Marek's so I took both of them for euthanasia and necropsy at UC Davis. I just got the preliminary report back and there is no evidence of Mareks or anything else that would cause paralysis. They suspect riboflavin deficiency. These guys have been on Purina Medicated Chick Starter since I got them, in fact from the same 50# bag. I am just devastated and wonder if I could have saved them had I known more about what was wrong. Here are the findings:
No significant gross lesions were found at postmortem. Given the clinical signs the most likely cause would be riboflavin (vitamin B2) deficiency, however at this time this is just a presumption. Unfortunately we cannot check for vitamin B2 in tissue samples. If no other cause for the leg paresis is found after all of our testing is completed, and riboflavin deficiency is still suspect, Vitamin B supplementation would be recommended. We could also try to find a lab that could test feed for riboflavin levels but there would definitely be a fee charged by any outside lab for this testing.

Histology and several diagnostic tests are underway to try to better characterize the problem. An updated report will follow.

I just got the report. Does anyone have experience with this? How do I supplement and how much? Right now I am just going to add some vitamin and electrolyte solution to the drinking water because I have it on hand.
You will get more information in the final report if that is just the prelim. Were these the new line cl's? I have heard of a lot of leg problems and deaths with them. Extra vitamins can't hurt but I would not be sure until I got the report that says final. They can do up to 4 updates, and it can be a while. When I had a silkie with a brain and lung fungas I got a ton of updates because it was so rare everyone in the entire lab wanted to say something. I'm sorry about tucker. Good luck with the fight!

Thanks to everyone for the chick advice and support for my ordeal with Tucker. I am still researching and making calls for help. I have learned that dogs are considered "property" and disputes over ownership are considered civil matters. For that reason even the police can't remove them from the owner without a court order.

Good Luck!!!! Keep fighting.
