This is Ede. I had to separate her from her other 7 in the clutch who were picking on her. She had bloody feathers and a dime size piece of skin missing. I put eggshell membrane on the wound and put her into the bathtub under a heat lamp. This is how she looks today 24 hours later. Cannot wait to put her back but she needs to grow up a bit. She is now 4 weeks and a little behind but catching up

Poor baby.

My broody English Orp thinks she fits in this nest box. There are 2 larger boxes above her. I've been trying to get a picture of her facing out for a week now, but she's not cooperating. Her eggs are due to hatch on the 16th.

LOL! My avatar is doing that exact same thing right now. Rear end hanging out and all. She had been in a hollowed out spot on the floor she made for herself but yesterday decided to move into a small nest box.

I've been getting a ton of fart eggs and shell-less eggs lately. (membrane only) I'm not sure who the shell-less eggs are coming from, it's either my light brahma that is 4 years old or one of my welsummer hens. It's irritating as they are getting broken in the nest. I'm getting about 5-6 shell-less eggs a week. And I'm gaining quite the fart egg collection. But here is my strangest fart egg ever. Reminded me of those ocean worm creatures that come out of the coral type casing. This one I know was from my brahma as I caught her in the nest. And it was open on the tip:
I know it's not funny, a GMO egg? Poor hen

It would be funny if I didn't know she's in a losing battle. She was on the nest for a long time today and nothing. She's still perky, but she's a 4 year old hatchery hen, so it's bound to happen sometime soon.

So you're saying you don't want DH and I to drop by with our overnight bags?

I love the old farmhouses and thought I'd like to experience it

Uh, yes.

Funny!

My hen is 3 years old now and has never been broody before. She plucked her belly last year, but nothing. So I didn't think much of it this year when she plucked herself. She's a sweet broody that never pecks me, just makes trilling noises. A far cry from my "mean" broody BR from Kathy that takes out chunks.

I wanted to get a picture of her facing out because, as I told Mary, she looks like a ahem "heavy woman" in tight jeans spilling out all over the place!

This isn't exactly scientific, but just thought I'd share an experience with a hen that kept laying eggs w/out shells. One of mine laid a shelless egg at least twice a week from the time she started laying. By the time she had been laying a year, I decided that something was just wrong with her plumbing. But then I started giving them a bit of calf manna every day in their feed. So maybe sometimes it's nutrition other than calcium? I don't know.

I cracked up over the broody spilling out of small nesting box - reminds me of a woman in the fitting room determined to be a size 6 jeans. Not that I know anyone like that.
