I know. When I read it back I had to laugh! I need a 2013 boy!

I know there are other CL people here and I made an interesting observation today that I found odd.

In my processing this week, I was working my way through a pen of boys all hatched at the same time. I did four each of CL, polish and marans. They were all within days of each other in age, the polish and CL dressed about the same size and the marans about a pound heavier.

The thing I found odd, (this might be too gross for some people) each bird was done one at a time with the same technique. It takes me about the same amount of time to pluck each bird. Each of the CL, rigor mortis set in before I could even get them half plucked. The other two breeds, it was not until I had them chilled. This was true of all 12 birds that I did. I just found it odd that it was breed specific.

The bird was perfectly fine, I braised one of the CL for dinner tonight and it was tender and delicious. I didn't bother resting it since I was going to braise it anyway.

Just found it odd.........

Have you processed any Exchequer Leghorns yet? I wonder if it is a leghorn thing.

I know that animals that are more stressed will enter rigor more quickly, my CL's seem to be not anxious but more alert and wary. I too keep watching for boy chicks, I have one pretty nice cream boy but hope for at least one insurance dude and my current backup is gold. Seems like it is harder to hatch a really nice cockerel than pullets.

I haven't, haven't done a final sort on that pen yet. I do have a spare white leghorn male, but I plan to send him off with the lady that takes all my spares next week.

I've done lots of campines in the past also, never noticed it with them and they have that alert type of temperament.

I just signed the acceptance of the sellers' counter offer paperwork; the property will go into escrow on Monday. e

I hope to move roosters and Cayugas first, which means Elvis and the geese will have the pond to themselves until I get a pond DUG at the other property. The 300 gallon stock tank will be put into service on the new property for the bigger ducks in the interim and allow Elvis some time to get to know any call girls here at our current digs.

Those are some of my plans at this point, anyway.

I went in June, but was too lazy to get up for it this morning.

I'm still riding on a high of my lady coming next Thursday to take all the extra boys. She's also planning to take a big tom turkey and wants to try quail. In a couple of months when they are ready, she wants ducks too.

I think the feed store is going to think we got lost (not that one turkey is going to make a dent in the 60+ we still have,
