Stella's Social Club

Got some pictures this morning.

My Cream Legbar pullet:

Lavender Ameraucana - she is 28 weeks and still looks nowhere close to laying. I think my cream legbar is going to beat her to it.

Olive - who is being a big time slacker and not laying any eggs for Mary to hatch:

And my 9 month old barnevelder pullet that thinks she is too pretty to have to lay an egg.

My favorite new barnevelder cockerel I'm growing out. He is 4 months old.

The other guy has some tail fluff and he's molting his wing feathers right now.

Well, I put her down. I don't know if it was a broken wing or what. I just do not have the time nor the ambition to care for weak, injured, or sick birds. I know it sounds cold hearted, but that is how it is around here. I want strong and healthy birds to breed from. I have enough work to do with what I have and just do not want added work and responsibility.

Sorry you had to cull her! I hope you will be making chicken and Dumplings soon

You have also inspired me! I will cull the Partridge Penedesenca roo that I have. He has a leg problem and should not be used in a breeding program.

What the heck is that dark thing? Surely it's not a chicken.

I'll be mean and say that "a face that only a mother could love" comes to mind.

The yellow one is neat looking with the dark skin.

Mary, I think you have a pair, dark cockerel, light pullet. Don't bet the farm on it but a friend who has silkies told me that the newly hatched chicks that have a very sharp upside-down v are pullets....I asked if it was 100% and she said it has worked with all the chicks she's had. She got the one silkie that Asta hatched with some LF chicks in July. She said pullet and she was right so I asked how she knew. Are those the only two you got?

What fun pictures!!! Happy Chooks (and anyone else interested), we have started a couple of threads to start the ball rolling on an SOP and a club for Cream Legbars. We could sure use any help we can get. We have Walt Leonard of the APA standards committee guiding us as we formulate an SOP. Here's the SOP page and here's the club page. Website should be up in the next week or two and we hope to be ready to accept new memberships by the last week of December or first part of January. Exciting stuff! We need to get all the CL people on board!

PS I, too, am looking at putting a bird down today, Screamer the shaky Isbar pullet that can't walk well. She has been lethargic lately and today has done nothing but sleep, the vitamin combo (selenium and vit e) don't seem to be helping. I think the time has come to stop her suffering.

Condolences and sympathy to all those having to put down birds. It is such a hard thing to do. Luckily I have Michael who is willing to do the deed for me when it needs to be done. Never easy for anyone.

I better get out to the little yellow house and finish building my brooder before the rest of the eggs hatch!
