Yes Kathy it could be used in a similar manner but it does seem to get a bit hotter than the EcoGlow. I have mine suspended just over their heads so they don't actually make contact. I have chains at each end and can easily raise it one link a day or so as they progress. Mine is the overhead mount. I got mine from Sweeter Heater directly. Mine heater is over 30 inches long but I can't recall exactly what length it is. I just checked the birds and they seem fine. I am sure impressed with the leg improvement already. The truth is in the pudding when those hobbles come off. I have been dipping their beaks and they are pecking at feed on the paper towels. Hoping for the best! That brooder looks really cool!

I think I will order a sweeter heater. I do not like Brinsea, and hate to give them ANY business. Maybe I can make a brooder like the old timer one. I dunno..... Anyway, it will soon be hatching time!

I think Renee sands the surface of all of her marans and says it allows for air/humidity loss- flow. She says if you don't do this in an incubator environment, most of the chicks drown.

I've sanded before and some still drown.

Renee (chooks chick) has some real dark layers.

Kathy, Thanks for posting that brooder. I have an Eco-glow 50. I use it for my meaties and works great, but was pricey. I like the "tent" model and will consider it if/when I need something new/additional.

Diva, Yep, our run on the mild weather is ending........looks like we're going to get winter after all.....

Christmas at our house for our local family members is now less than two weeks away.....so much to do, so little time! .

Hm that's interesting everyone else's troubles with the maran eggs... I just hatched out from two dozen local FBCM maran eggs, two were early deaths and one didn't hatch at the end but the rest hatched right along with my regular EE eggs, no problems. The very darkest eggs (which are going to be my keeper chicks) ALL hatched- no losses. EEs had similar mortality rates, 2 or 3 early deaths and one that didn't hatch, I think I had about 30 EE eggs in there. This is in my new-to-me sportsman 1502. I think that's spectacular considering the time of year! I will keep your tips in mind though if my hatching rates on the marans starts to drop. This was only my second batch of marans to hatch, and the first was e-bay eggs (4/12 hatched).
