Stella's Social Club

So, I went down to the basement to lock down my eggs a couple of hours ago. They were in closed egg cartons still on the turner. I found this: Five Icelandics already hatched. The one on the far right had managed to get out of the carton (?), fall to the bottom of the cabinet from the top rack without getting smashed in the auto turner. It was walking around the incubator floor all fluffed out pecking at bits of shell that were reigning down from the others. Third from the right is also a Cream leg bar cockerel who hatched but was still in his carton.
The other four Icelandics were still in the carton with their bottoms in their shell and their tops on the egg next to them.

Jeeze, Icelandics! When will I learn? I told Kelly I kept hearing cheeping today and thought it was from the brooder in the little yellow house. I kept going outside and convinced myself it was a bird in the cedar tree. Never dreamed it was from the basement!

Gosh Mary, you seem to do this all the time. No treats for you.

Long, Long work day....around the yard.

Did Squaw Peak, (37 minutes up, 31 minutes down) prepped the garden for the last of the planting, planted tomatoes and strawberries.... I've still got to put in the rest tomorrow... mowed the lawn, cleaned the pool for the umpteenth time.

Tomorrow I've GOT to dust and worm the chickens in the big coop.

I've been semi-good today for a brittle diabetic. 4 eggs for breakfast and a steak for dinner and since the Girl Scouts delivered yesterday...2 Samoas... problem with those are, you always want some mora.

I have my Dr.s appointment on Weds. morning and then my hour with my accountant Wednesday afternoon.. STRESS DAY.

OMG, Happy Chooks - that made me fo buy an Almond Joy at Gray's Corner - and i walked there and back to combat it.

Whoa, Mary! You always got some sort of Brinksmanship stuff going on! See how wonderful you are in crises!?!

Erk, Mahonri! (Is it okay if I call you Dar, too?). Just "Erk!" :(

I think I have a lot of late quitters in the Icelandic eggs. They look like they quit a couple of days ago, maybe three. I am leaving them in of course. There is one more Icelandic to hatch and a whole bunch of cream leg bars. Only two Isbars left in this group.

I set several dozen eggs the other day and just candled them. Almost all are clear. I didn't collect eggs for a few days and I think they froze. I salvaged 14 Icelandics and five Isbars out of about 6 dozen eggs! I have to remember to collect daily. With Tucker feeding animals with me it gets a little harried at the point we get to the coops. I usually just throw scratch and go inside then forget to go back out later and collect eggs when I don't have Tucker with me. We'll get a system in place soon.

Mary, this one has your name written all over it! Look at the light blue crest! Probably too pretty to be a girl! I will probably try to keep another roo and see how it goes. I have more hens and pullets in that coop now so they may do better together with more girls to go around.

What beautiful coloring and crest!!

I heard cackling in the barn (not the chicken end) and went to see. One of Elska's pullets had laid an egg in a corner. When I bent down to pick it up, I see one of her sisters scramble off four eggs, on the floor behind my meatie tractor (stored upright in the barn for the winter). Three of the eggs belonged to the pullets and the other was Elska's. She lays a "torpedo" egg and it is larger than the pullets ones. I knew Elska leaves the chicken yard and goes around to the other end of the barn where I have a door open for the two barn cats to come and go during the day. I knew she was eating their dry cat food, but if she is teaching the pullets to hide eggs..........

Dar - Ugh taxes, don't remind me.

Mary - You have the most amazing hatching stories and brooder stories. Heck, animal stories in general. I'm trying to stay away from the cake. I wish everyone else in the family would hurry up and eat it all. That chick is gorgeous and look at that crest already! Keeper for sure!

Other Mary - Sneaky Elska (snicker)

Linda - probably less fat in that candy bar than in this cake. The cake (between the cake, the filling and the frosting) has 4 cups of coconut, plus the almonds, plus a whole pint of heavy cream - but it's really good!
