BTW, we question the Valhound breed for Rodney. I am having him DNA tested. There is a test for mixed breed dogs that goes back and identifies all the breeds in them. It is pretty cool. They say it helps with understanding your dog's behavior but I just think it would be cool to know. I may just test Tucker too!

Those rescue groups always put the most exotic breed names to every mixed breed they have. Where exactly do they think this rare breed Valhound came from? There are so many of them running loose on the street. Rodney is cute just the same, hopefully the two together will let them adapt this time. Congratulations on your two dog household. You only need two more to catch up (but then those last two will need to weigh about 250# total to catch up weight-wise).

Egads I made a horrible discovery tonight. I lost one of my dark egg layer cockerels. I have no idea where he is. Kelly was here this morning and confirmed my suspicions that all but one were boys. Then tonight I saw four of them standing in the run. I had sectioned off a small area for them with deer netting. They had managed to get through the netting and then out of the run through the 2x4 fence openings and a gap where it meets the coop. I got them all back but one was still missing. Then they got out again while we were looking for the little roo. The Isbar went under the little yellow house, all the way in the back where we couldn't reach her even with a net. She is sleeping there tonight. I doubt she will make it through the night given the cold and raccoons. I had to leave her there because there was no way to get her out without moving the house. Hopefully she will make it and the little cockerel will show up as well. Sheesh it is always something!

It's going to hit 82 this weekend... I'd better start seeing green coming up through the ground where I planted seeds!!!

I'm picking some cauliflower this weekend... it survived the frosts!... gotta couple ripe tomatoes that will become parts of sandwiches too!

Ohh I am so happy for you

I have not opened it at all and am just hoping the eggs will be okay. Heck, I figure lots of eggs go 7 hours without a broody sitting on them.

I will join you! Setting a few in just a few minutes! We can have a hatching party in 3 weeks!

PS - are some of those eggs kinda light for dark eggs? My New Hamps lay eggs as dark as that front tray.

I was thinking the same thing Kathy, some of the eggs definitely not dark even if you count miscellaneous dirt on them. Let's just humor Mary along.

It looks like the bloom on the eggs. More noticeable on dark eggs some of my penedesenca get it.

Not a farm - I did a beautiful job of shoveling and driveway and the street near us (the plow never comes that far) in less than an hour. Came in, dried off, and NOW it's snowing in earnest. Plus it alternates with sleet and wind. I'll deal with it tomorrow. Still not bad by usual winter standards. Temp has been hovering at the freezing mark. Otherwise very nice outside, I like the fresh air.

I figure we had about 3 inches at 2:39 pm, who knows how much more since.

Shoveling snow is great exercise. Ask me how I know this.

No I can't do the tongue to the nose stuff but, would like to see a photo of who can. Yes, I know pig latin also. I am just a well rounded, talented human being - more rounded than talented but it works out over time.

This is true. Mary calls me to ask me when she set her eggs. This is why she has eggs hatching in her turner and falling to the bottom.

Can't grow nuthin' in HELL in the summer. Weird, huh? I thought so too when Dar first posted it.

I'll be hatching sometime next week, depending on when they are shipped. Welsummers and Barnevelders are coming. Plus I'll set some Olive eggers, since Mary doesn't want them. Maybe toss a few Cream Legbar eggs in just for fun. (fertilized by my Barnevelder rooster - should be an interesting mix)

the barnevelders give a nice olive egg cross. not to dark but real nice

The olive egger eggs I'll be setting is from my hen from Kathy. She lays a super dark olive egg. (and HUGE too) She's a multiple generation OE crossed back to Marans. I've been checking her eggs since she started back laying from her molt and yesterday, when I had lunch, it was fertile!!!!!!!! So they are going in the bator!

Mary wanted some of her eggs, but she's worried that she has too many chicks right now, so they are mine all mine.
