The USPS has decided to cover their deficit they are going to charge a "fee" approximately 10 dollars per package for shipping of live animals, without in any way bettering the quality of their service. PLEASE take a minute to follow the link and click Submit a Formal Comment or send them an e-mail to the address listed and urge them NOT to do that. It may not sound like much but it ALREADY costs me $35-50 to ship a box of live chicks/birds. This $10 fee is going to choke small people like us. PLEASE pass the word around! This new regulation will apply to BEES, too, making our costs to bring in new stock for our beehives more expensive. PLEASE DO THIS! Kathy, that is unreal. You have to give the car body credit for not collapsing. I am so so glad this had a good outcome. How scary that must have been. Nothing but blessings going forth!

One down, four to go! We cleaned coop number 1 today since it is temporarily empty. Michael shoveled out the shavings and put them in the back of the Polaris for dumping in the field.




Michael vacuumed the inside then I hosed it down and vacuumed the water out.



Then I sprayed all the surfaces with disinfectant.



I opened the door and nest box lid o let it dry out overnight.




The coops have held up great in six months considering all the issues with leaking and flooding we had in the beginning.





The run is totally overgrown and we don't have a regular mower, just the riding mower. I may move the layers into this coop and let them mow for us. That would also give me the opportunity to deep clean each coop like this by rotating the birds. Hmmm, I'll have to think about that.

I switched from a vacuum to a leaf blower for coop cleaning. But wear a mask and goggles if you try it!

Never again! I had so much dust swirling around in that coop, I thought I would choke to death!

Doesn't the water on the wood make it warp?
One time (I was young and stupid) I took my wood silverware drawer out and "washed it." hahaha. It warped and never did fit back in.
