Well, today I decided to start my cheese making education. First cheese? Juusta leipa, a Finnish cheese that is made in the western UP and Wisconsin. Everything went exactly as it should, until I came to the part where the cheese is placed under the broiler. My phone rang, and it was my neighbor, asking if my horses were home, as someone called to tell him there were 3 running loose on the next road over from us. I pulled the cheese out of the oven and bolted out the door. Sure enough, the Fence Alert was blinking - always a bad sign. At least it was not 2 am, like the last 2 times.
After grabbing 3 halters and a bucket of grain I screeched out of the driveway (leaving my BF staring out the window) and found the culprits in a field where they used to graze in the summer. My neighbor showed up shortly after, and we lured the rotten buggers in about the time my BF showed up wondering what was going on - he is not horse folks and can not imagine the havoc wreaked by horses in the road. Neighbor Jack drove his truck slowly while I rode the tailgate leading the horses (stopped once to tie the pony to Lily the Mare, as he can be a pistol when he feels like it and she is more patient - and larger - than I am) with BF following behind with his blinkers on.
Since I was not sure where the breach was, all 3 got tied to trees and we went back in the tractor to find the hole. My neighbor on that side met us back there, and we found where the electric fence was broken, apparently by a deer - he has seen several bucks back in the field. Rather than risking a repeat, they went in to the winter pasture, with a solid wire fence as well as hot wire.
Then I realized OMG - the cheese. Back under the broiler. And - it turned out perfect. Next cheese - Cheddar!
Omg what a story!
Now you can rewrite the cheese recipe to include "must chase horsees" to make perfect cheese......
Say cheese.... sorry, could not help myself
