re: ecoglows, any suggestions on keeping them relatively clean? or just let them get messy & then clean once the chicks are out of the brooder?

I wash the top in the sink when I clean the Brooder. I clean with anti bacterial once a week.

I cover the tops of the Ecoglows with spongy drawer liner, taped down in four places. It keeps the tops cleaner and give the chicks a foothold when they jump up on it. Mine is usually at an angle so it really helps keep them from sliding off. I pull it off and rinse it dry or toss it and add another piece when it gets nasty. My chicks actually roost on the high end as they get older.

Drawer liners is a good idea!

They are machine washable--put them into the laundry after rinsing them.

I use the same stuff in the bottom of my hatchers. I used to toss it too, then decided to try washing it since I was going through so much. I just put them aside and when I have a half dozen or so dirty pieces, I give them a shake outside. Then I put them all in the washing machine with an old towel and run it through just like any other load of wash. If I'm in a hurry, I put them through the dryer too or just let them air dry. I've been using the same pieces for way over a year.

I had bought about six large rolls on clearance at Sam's Club and have never even had to open them. It truly washes like a dream.

Good idea to use it on the Ecoglow, it would give great footing for the chicks because you KNOW they won't stay off the top.

I usually wait until they are done being brooded, then clean it.

It's a never ending battle while brooding. I clean it with paper towels and windex.

Yup, I use that rubberized shelf lining stuff too, in the brooder for very new chicks before I start with the pine shavings, and on top of the EcoGlow, too.

I need help with olive egger issues. I am not up to speed on the genetics of OE's but I have four that hatched from very dark olive eggs. Two weeks ago they started laying and the eggs were dark green. I haven't had a green egg in over a week and the eggs I am getting now from that coop are blue. In this picture the dark green eggs were from the olive eggers last week and the one's that say "this one" I got today. They have been the same blue color all week.



Is it possible that two were laying olive eggs for a few days then stopped and the other two started laying and they lay blue eggs? Two of the pullets are white and two are wheaten but the all came from very dark green eggs. There are no other layers in that coop except for one BCM and three Icelandics.
