Stella's Social Club

Chica escaped from her pasture yesterday morning. I found her wandering about two acres away in the pasture with Jack and Diane. Not good. I hurried back to wake Michael to help herd her back to safety. He put on shorts, flip flops and an old ratty ski parka. Apparently that is a turn-on to Chica. In case you don't know, female emus stick out their chest, raise there rear ends and drop to the ground, signaling to the male that they are ready to mate. Good grief.

They are Crele Pene X Cream Legbars--For a long time they thought I was going to kill them every time I went near them. They love me now though.

I love the Penedesenca white ear lobes glowing in the led lights.

mine still seem to think i'm after them... but they lay lovely green eggs.

He wasn't annoyed. Getting up to help with animal urgencies doesn't make him mad. Getting up to restart the modem for me does.

What you can't tell in the video is that it took a long time to steer her back to her pasture. She was as far away on our property as you can go. Had she gone over that fence, she would have been in class at the Christian High School! Moving just involves forcing her in the direction you want her to go. The lollygagging and preening are just her way of stalling. It all happens at her pace. And even though it didn't look it in the video, it was COLD!

And no, we don't know how she got out. She had to have gone over the fence to get into that pasture. There is no other way. If being chased, emus can fall over fences. It is disappointing that she is ready to mate but we won't be able to have it happen because she doesn't do well penned with other emus. We have tried both boys in there and it always ends badly in a couple of days. Maybe when we start finding eggs we can open the gate between the two pastures and see what happens. They have more than ample room now but maybe it would give them someplace else to retreat versus over the fence.

I am just so happy that it ended well. I finally put the camera down and held my arms out to force her through the gate. Then Michael tells me I should have kept shooting and ended my video properly! No way. The object was to get Chica back to her pasture.
