Yes a gopher! We have mounds of dirt by the hundreds each week, but this is the first time one has come up and stared at me! Diva, Tucker walked right by it!

LOL My dogs dig up and catch gophers...

Had a very unpleasant experience a few weeks ago when I picked up some random round object only to realize as I turned it over in my (thankfully rubber-gloved) hand that it was a gopher head... never did find the rest of it.

Thanks for that Rinda! I wasn't planning to sleep tonight anyway.

I enjoyed seeing the pretty songbirds on the video just ignoring the gopher!

I would have thought that they would be frightened of it but they seem to think they are quite safe there. That is the way they act around squirrels around here.

Fat little scavengers that make a mess of your yard and eat your garden. Tucker needs lessons in gopher hunting.

Everyone seems okay this morning, even at just 1*. The waterers were mostly frozen, even with defrosters, but we found it was mostly in the trays of the big waterers and when ice was removed, it glugged down. The Tiny Terrorist is being terrorized herself and is in Zane's former cage during their inside incarceration because she is the target of all young males in the coop and her 1 gallon was frozen solid so had to take her a fresh one from the house. BUT, thankfully, everyone seems to be surviving so far. Tonight will be almost as cold, then a big warm up but a period of rain is coming. Can't we catch a break??

Got a package from my son yesterday who vacationed in Europe over the holidays. He teaches in S. Korea and went to Holland and Paris and Belgium. Sent me a zippered pouch from Paris and some hand cream and lip balm, oven mitts and some interesting waffle cone-looking cookie things that were chewy and great tasting, but no idea of calorie count or actual content since nothing is in English except the price, lol. He sent his Aunt Janet some lovely fridge magnets that she collects and his brother and SIL some shot glasses which they collect so I have to get those to them. First package I ever got from the Netherlands.

My round thermometer mounted on the deck post outside my kitchen window FROZE. It froze at 17* so I put an AcuRite out on the bench outside the kitchen door. That one says 6* and dropping. What good is a thermometer that freezes, for cripes sake?

Yucky weather.

Quote: Cool. I looked into importing at one time, but the breeder I wanted eggs from wasn't willing to work with me.

Glad everyone is doing okay so far. Stay warm! And what a nice package from your son.

Is that a ground hog?
Nope, gopher. They are hard to kill, I've tried everything out there. The last one I had pulled the whole dang trap down into the hole. I dug around and couldn't find it.

It sounds like Jason will have plenty of help From Spain!

We found their holes, put a hose down one of them and waited for them to come up the exit hole. A twelve gauge on scatter did the trick!

Well that answers the question about what is worse than finding a gopher in your yard!!

I had to put a plastic waterer in the small coop, I had a metal one sitting in a big heated dog dish full of sand which worked great until the waterer sprung a leak. Then when the weather got really cold the plastic one froze up. I dug out a plastic plant pot that was bigger than the waterer top, lined it with bubble wrap insulation and inverted it over the top of the waterer (so that the trough was still uncovered), and so far it has not frozen again. And the chickens can not pick at the bubble wrap.
