Awww, nothing like a broody with chicks! And beautiful barring on her. Congrats.
Thank you! She's one of my Stukel line BR hens. I love that line, super gorgeous and large, decent layers as well as sweet personalities. She's the only one of her sisters who has gone broody, though. She raised chicks a year ago and has been broody several times prior to those but either I didn't give her eggs or something happened. Her daughter hasn't been broody, either. Guess Dottie will have to do it for all of them. I have enough dang broodies in the D'Anver coop anyway.

The second set of eggs that DH set while I was gone have started to hatch. So far 3 Jubilee Orps, 1 Chocolate Orp, 2 Tolbunt Polish, 1 Blue Cochin and 1 Black Cochin. There is a New Hampshire and another Cochin pipped so far. All LF. At least he has good taste in what to hatch, LOL He just set eggs out of the pens where he likes the birds.

I also did some candling last night. I know, WAY too early, it was only day three but I couldn't wait for a first peek. Three of the five Ayam Cemani eggs have obvious veining!!!!!

Great news!

BR babies are hatching under my Dottie today. She has three chicks, one pipped and one left to pip.

Gorgeous hen and babies! Congrats!

I have Rex who is 1/2 Stukel BR and 1/2 Delaware (so essentially, he's genetically more than 1/2 BR) and single factor barred. I'm following a proscribed path that Bob Blosl suggested to me before he died, bless his soul. It was originally going to be done with Rex's brother, Indy, who looked pure, but Isaac killed Indy so Rex was my only other good option. Rex has a better top line/tail set than Indy did, so hoping for some decent tails on these, and he's stocky with great leg length. Indy and Rex had the same mother, my Ida.

This morning Dottie has 5 little fuzzballs in there. I do think one of the chicks isn't a BR, but a black Rock. Dang it. I think one egg was Gloria Jean's, my splash Rock hen. She is the only one in with Rex who could produce that. Haven't even looked at the last one hatched closely yet since it hatched about midnight and it was so exhausted, I didn't think it would make it.

Love the hen-and-chick pictures, they are so sweet.

Incubators are running with a mix-up batch of eggs - CL's from my birds, some SFH/blue Silkie mixes from my one silkie hen, CL/brown egg crosses (Delaware, Basque) which should yield Olive Eggers, one special CL/Sussex egg from my sweet speckled sussex Freckles (my only named bird).

Then SFH eggs from 2 sources, Jubilee Orps, SB orps and bantam BR extras from one breeder, and some Arkansas Blue eggers - I Really like those eggs, they are large and a very consistent pretty light blue color.

:fl hope springs eternal!

Well, TWO are Gloria Jean's babies, two Black Rock kids, but 2 Dottie babies and 1 Wynette baby. Gloria Jean will be going to KY with Ladyhawk at the end of the month so that will fix that issue. My BR hens have a habit of sitting and sitting, letting others lay under them, leaving the nest then going back much later to finish the job, so I guess I got GJ's egg instead of Ida's for that last chick, too. Ack!

Do love the 100% hatch rates of the broodies, though.

I'm curious, what path did Bob talk about? If you don't mind sharing. He was a wonderful man and helpful to so many.

Beautiful babies!
