I'm invoking the "no more broodies" curse. Last night there were 2 more barnevelder hens on the nest. I about died. (already have 6 broodies) Thankfully, they were off the nest this morning and just the 3 are still on the nest. (2 hatched babies already and 1 I broke when I moved her to another coop)

I don't like the way Maura mothers the chicks. She's very protective of them, too much so because she warns them off of us, unlike the rest of the D'Anver hens, which makes them scared of us. Tried to put her and her three back into the main coop with the other two broodies and chicks who are a week older than hers, but it was a bloody battle and I was afraid the tiny ones would be hurt. So, it's back to the broody cage in the front storage vestibule for her until the chicks are bigger and can get out of the way of the nutty hens. She didn't brood with them this time so it's going to be harder to get them to get along.

Freeloader Chica. If they were Loca's eggs, then I definitely should have had you send them to Mike!

He needs a crazy Loca too!

I should have named Serena "Loca" instead. She is the Delaware-looking daughter of Isaac and my super sweet dark red hen, Rita. She isn't so serene. She screeches like a banshee and flares like a psycho broody on the nest if you even look at her, can't keep from jumping into my squash garden for some reason (got her out of there four or five times recently), and if she wants attention, she'll bite the fire out of your leg. Then you pick her up and she does the classic "Delaware hug". Kathy knows what that is, I know. Here is not-so-serene Serena standing next to her mother:

I thought Tiny was your "Loca" Cyn.

You have 2 of them?

Actually, Tiny has become quite subdued of late. She and DH had quite a row and she was a little bit injured, all her own fault. She attacked him from behind (she was on the nestbox and he was standing in front of it with his back to her) and when he grabbed her to stop the attack and slammed her backward, hitting the edge of the nest, unfortunately, he thought he'd crushed her windpipe. She gasped for air for a brief period. We even separated her in case she didn't make it, but that is one really tough hen! She spent several days not looking so great, obviously quite sore, but she's recovered, albeit not as feisty as she was previously. However, she isn't the brightest bulb in the package and still pecks him on the head when he bends over within her reach.

I'm amazed she's still alive, frankly, after all her shenanigans over the past four years.

My dishwasher is in Milwaukee working on a big bridge project that may last for over a year - I really miss him

(so does the cat, he feeds her Tuna every day). Since he also mows, the lawn is looking pretty ragged.
