Mary, your Lukka is something. What a keeper. She has made many a chick very happy. Just too cute.
I still can't believe that my leghorn went broody. Andy yes crazyhen.. I put three eggs under her, and no..I don't need anymore chicks.
I woke up to 4 hatched from the bator today. EE's. I'm wanting some colored eggs out there. I have a friend that gave me a doz. to hatch..I was ok with that, then she gave another friend of mine that met up with her..a doz. for her..and she says, and this doz. is for Cynthia. Oh well. I offered any back that she may want. She's big into frizzle..me not so much. I'm hoping for a pretty blue girl from one of those pretty blue eggs..straight, not frizzle. :/ I think some are cute, some are not.
I have save a white silkie until it crowed. I have a collar for it. I want to breed those so bad. He started to crow. The collar isn't working as well as I had hoped. Not sure I can keep him. So bummbed.



I think I have it tightened as far as I dare. It doesn't shock, it keeps them from being able to take that deep breath in to make a loud noise. Roosters should be able to crow. Maybe if he doesn't get any louder, he will be ok here. Close the neighbors bedroom window. :/

Many years ago my DH was putting on a family wedding in his garden. It was recommended that he put an old TV in the garden and leave it on 24 hours per day. So he put a small TV on a table in the garden, planted $1,000 worth of flowers over several days and that TV flickered and the sound was on to the morning of the wedding. Nothing was touched. They disconnected the TV, the night of the wedding, deer came in and ate everything.

So you'd have to be willing to have it forever..............or until they got used to it and learned to ignore it.

But it makes me think of farside. The deer probably pulled up chairs, sipped cocktails and tried to figure out how to change the channel without thumbs.

Anyone tried this? With the bees, chickens, and other critters and people around the place I have become very reluctant to use weed killers, and my yard shows it.

I've used the white vinegar (straight) in a spray bottle for several years. It seems to work great on the broad leaf weeds, not so much on the thin ones. It kills them right down to the crown but you do have to apply it again sometimes, which usually finishes them off. The only con is you really can't direct the spray completely on just the weed and you end up with brown circles all over the lawn! Looks like a lot of dogs came through and relieved themselves!

But the good news is the grass grows right back, but the weed doesn't.

The last of the three Icelandic eggs hatched during the night. A little yellow chick identical to the first two. I didn't want to have to give it to Lukka and her daughter is still sitting on an infertile egg . I went into the coop with the little chick in my hand and she bolted out of the nest box and was running around outside. I put the little chick down and she came over and starting clucking to it. She shooed the others off the chick. I picked it back up and she went back into her nest box. I slipped the egg out from under her, slipped the chick into the box and stapled wire across the front to keep the others out and let Mom and baby bond. If all goes well I'll move them to a nest box on the floor after dark. I hope this word! That will be the last of my serious broodies All three have babies now. There are a couple of broody wanna-bee but they aren't committed to it yet. Hopefully they move on!

I think I will raise the next Brabanters and the Pavlovskyas in the brooder and then move them to grow-out in Coop #1 after I move the broodies and babies back to their home bases.

This is tiring!

Looked out the window and saw this. It's been warm, have had a cold front move in. Had to grab the camera and take a photo from the front porch.

My big, brown vermin decided to pay a visit to my yard again last night.

Think they like plum trees?


Fortunately they couldn't reach most of the fruit.


And they don't appear to like the three lilacs I just put in.


Glad I took pictures of daylilies yesterday, they are apparently a favorite. About 40+ buds and flowers.................GONE!

They'll be back for the leaves.









At least they don't seem to like plumbago and I do!


But we built fortresses for my new beloved Banks roses, even if it does look like a prison camp right now.

I swear, if I wasn't afraid of attracting mountain lions, I'd be tossing a few carcasses over the back fence.
