Hi all! Glad you are feeling better Kelly. You certainly sounded better today.
We have been having a nightmare with baby chicks. Lukka is a digger and she has dug out under both the coop and the brooder house and the chicks have gotten under. We have been forced to take foundation boards off to rescue chicks. Major pain in the neck! We have tried all kinds of things but this area is severely eroded and undermined by gopher and ground squirrel tunnels. I am afraid to even walk on it. Today I was in there and lost my footing and slipped impaling my arm on a piece of fencing the was sticking out. See them in the photo? It is swollen and oh so ouch tonight.
Here are Lukka and seven babies digging their way to freedom.
So....
I went to Home Depot and bought pressure treated footers and Trex decking. This is what it looks like now! No way to dig under except on the edge, but there is wood buried under the lip of the deck. I need to make a better and smaller pop door ramp tomorrow. Maybe just cut this one in half. I hope they don't demand lounge chairs and drinks with little umbrellas on the patio now!
No sooner did we get this done that the chicks found out they could go through the field fencing and under the chicken wire barrier to freedom from the run! We chased them all day! Tomorrow we will shore that up with more erosion wattles. We are always battling the soil erosion on this hill. But, I still love it!
Good Luck containing Lukka and her chicks!
So far this morning everything is good out there. The gopher and ground squirrels problem is so bad I decided to stop treating the chickens to scratch grains. I think the vermin are coming in for that. Maybe if I stop they will move on. Each coop has a flock block inside plus regular feed. I am so worried that the chicks will fall in the holes. Some of the holes from the ground squirrels are 6 inches in diameter. It is gross and scary plus I have trouble staying up right on the undermined ground.
